Cockrell Butterfly Center Near 3800 Main in Houston: Don’t Miss the Insect Vending Machine

January 30, 2015 | alliance

The vending machine at the Cockrell Butterfly Center is probably unlike any you've encountered before. In place of the typical sweets and salty chips you'll find inside most vending machines, this Insect Vending Machine dispenses snacks made with insects as the main ingredient. It features different delicacies from around the world, and you might be surprised by how tasty the culturally diverse treats are.

The Insect Vending Machine in the entomologist's lab is a must-see at the Cockrell Butterfly House, but it's just one of the unique features at this branch of The Houston Museum of Natural Science, which isn't far from 3800 Main. The Rainforest Conservatory is probably more striking, at least at first glance. It's 50-foot waterfall gushes into a stream that winds throughout the man-made rainforest, which teems with butterflies from exotic locales—as well as insects and plants. Nearby in Chrysalis Corner, you can learn more about how butterflies undergo their metamorphosis and watch it happen.
