The Needle Works: An Austin Craft Space

If you love the centuries-old craft of needlepoint, program your GPS to take you to The Needle Works. They’ve been in Austin since 1978, selling high quality, hand painted needlepoint canvases, fine threads, notions, needles, and other supplies. The store moved into a new space not too long ago; it’s a spacious, 3500 square foot showplace, built in the Craftsman architectural style.

Carol Lake Designs, Elizabeth Turner Collection, Barbara Russell Designs, Robbyn’s Nest Designs, Sundance Designs and Pease on Earth Designs are some of the large array of canvas designers in stock at The Needle Works. You can also expand your needlepoint horizons with a class, either one-on-one or in a group. Visit the website for a calendar of classes and pricing information!

Wheatsville Food Co-op: Fresh Food in Austin, Texas

You don’t have to be a member to shop at the Wheatsville Food Co-op, but if you do pay your $70 sign up fee, you can become a partial owner of the store. Visit this Austin spot to shop for all of your favorite items in a friendly, pleasant setting. You can buy in bulk to save money and reduce packaging: items available in the bulk department include wheat flour, dried fruits, brown & white rice, granola, coffee, oats, corn meal, nuts, beans and pastas.

Meat, poultry and seafood are also represented in the store, all sustainably raised according to environmentally friendly practices. Frozen foods? They’ve got those, too, with all of your favorite brands stocked in the store. About 80% of the fruits and vegetables here are organic and the deli has some yummy prepared foods to eat there or take home to 95twenty.

Gourmet Grocery Store Meets Great Eats at Epicerie

For relaxed dining, you can’t beat Epicerie. Located where Hancock Road meets Woodview Avenue, just look for the blue house, and you’ll be at Epicerie. Inside, it's clean and comfortable, a nice combination for a relaxing lunch with co-workers or friends. The menu is seasonal, so it changes all the time. But there’s always a good selection of house-made soups, salads, sandwiches and small plates. (Try the French Fries, a real favorite.)

Lots of folks also come in after work or in the evening to taste from a nice selection of wines and to share some terrific cheeses and cured meat trays. Don't miss the fresh-baked beignets! Chaparral Ice: Ice Skating and More in North Austin

Do you miss winter? If yes, head to Chaparral Ice in north Austin for year-round winter fun.  This ice rink is a popular spot for recreational skating where kids of all ages have fun.  Admission and skate rental is $10 for adults and children five and over. Check their online calendar for adult skate times. Chaparral Ice offers ice skating classes for those interested in learning the art of figure skating as well as hockey leagues for those that want to improve their skills. If you don’t feel comfortable on blades, there are other fun ice-based activities including curling and boomball. Be sure to dress for the cold: wear thick socks and gloves.
