It’s Always Time for Tea at Holly Berry Tea Room

May 8, 2014 10:30 am

League City locals looking for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon are invited to visit the Holly Berry Tea Room, a charming little business that specializes in traditional English teas. The ritual of afternoon tea and sandwiches is very Continental, and Holly Berry does it to perfection.

The tea room is located in a converted house on Founders Square. There’s some interesting history behind the complex: the town took five 1920s houses from around the area, uprooted them from their foundations, and transplanted them to one block to serve as retail stores. Once you’re there, you’ll get the royal treatment of your choice of excellent teas, both caffeinated and herbal, served in fine china with light dishes alongside them. The salads here are fresh and tasty and the cheese plates are quite nice.

If you want to visit, it’s highly recommended to call ahead because Holly Berry books many days in advance.

Crusty Garlic Bread Sets the Tone at Pomodoro’s Cucina Italiana

May 1, 2014 11:39 am

When you walk in the front doors of Pomodoro's Cucina Italiana, you'll be greeted by the fragrant aroma of garlic, basil, and other smells signature to excellent Italian fare. That said, you'll most likely be left with a craving for garlic bread, a fan favorite here. A crusty Italian baguette is slathered with rich, decadent garlic butter, which regulars report is worth the calories. Or start off with the fried mozzarella, which is also very good.

For entrees, the selection is extensive. Regulars rave about the hearty lasagna, which comes in a massive portion that will satisfy even the biggest appetite. Also good is the lobster ravioli with cream sauce and the poached seafood chilled and served on a bed of fresh mixed greens. Leave room for some tiramisu for dessert; you won’t be disappointed.

Pomodoro's Cucina Italiana is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant also delivers, should you feel like staying in for the night.

April 24, 2014 11:14 am

Italian food has a proud tradition of both fish and pizza preparation, and if you want to try the best of both worlds, a stop at Village Pizza and Seafood may be in order. This local favorite has earned an excellent reputation with fair prices and swift service.

Pizzas here are made New York-style, with a thin but solid crust fired in the pizza oven to the perfect consistency and then topped with a tangy, flavorful sauce, fresh-grated cheese, and your choice of toppings. Some of the house specialties include a Philly cheesesteak pizza with grilled onions and a hearty, tasty vegetarian combo. For seafood, some favorites among locals include the seafood platters, which offers tastes of clams, tilapia filets, and oysters with housemade cocktail and tartar sauces. The shrimp po'boys are ideal for a quick lunch.
