Sip Espresso, Nosh Arepas at The Coffee Bistro

April 3, 2014 12:05 pm

Locals know that the best place to get a serious cup of java is League City’s Coffee Bistro. However, this unique restaurant has a lot more to offer than just great cups of joe. Instead of the traditional bagels and pastries, Coffee Bistro serves a menu of authentic, delicious Dominican and Caribbean food. Regulars rave about the arepas, which are delicious little fried corn dumplings stuffed with meat or cheese. They’re a great way to start the day with something hearty. Also excellent are the maduros, sweet plantains delicately fried so the sugars caramelize.

The Coffee Bistro also serves lunch and dinner, including a quite tasty pork chop sauteed with onions. Prices are reasonable, and service is fast and friendly.

Expect More Than Just Catfish at Sudie’s

March 27, 2014 8:51 am

Sudie's in League City is a chain of family-owned restaurants offering seafood and Southern dishes. After opening its first location in 1983, Sudie's became a local favorite, serving all-you-can-eat catfish, which is the eatery's staple. The League City location opened in 2003, and it now serves more than just catfish. It offers a new fish of the day as well as Southern favorites, such as chicken fried steak.

Other good bets are the crawfish, as well as the beans, described by regulars as smoky and delicious. The chicken fried steak receives two thumbs up from regulars, and hamburgers appeal to landlubbers, too.

Sudie's League City location is open Sundays through Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Lunch specials are offered on weekdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Two Great Websites for Muffin Recipes

March 20, 2014 12:40 pm

If you’re growing tired of the usual blueberry muffin recipe, it might be time to switch things up in the kitchen. Put your baking skills to the test with these wonderful muffin recipes from two of the best recipe sites from around the web..

Cooking Light
Cooking Light’s list of Healthy Muffin Recipes is the perfect resource for the health-conscious baker. Muffins don’t need to be packed with calories in order to taste great, and there are a number of simple ingredient substitutions that can help to make your muffins a bit more nutritious. The Tuscan Lemon Muffins are made with olive oil and fresh lemon juice instead of sugary sweeteners or phony flavors, and even the seemingly indulgent Chocolate-Chocolate Chip Muffins are a bit healthier than the store-bought kind.

Martha Stewart
For truly creative muffin recipes, Martha Stewart’s website is one of the best resources. Beautiful photos provide endless inspiration, while the easy-to-follow recipes are simple enough for even the amateur home baker. Try the easy Applesauce Muffins with light, fluffy icing, or bake some Pumpkin Doughnut Muffins for a thicker consistency and sweet, spicy flavor. Whether you prefer something dessert-like or a muffin that’s a bit more savory, Martha Stewart has a muffin recipe for everyone.
