Speed Art Museum: Take Your Time

No, the Speed Art Museum isn’t a museum devoted to fast-moving art. The oldest and largest art museum in the state of Kentucky, the Speed Art Museum was established in 1927 in memory of James Breckenridge Speed. A local financial leader who contributed greatly to the city’s development, Speed spearheaded its street railroad system and used his personal finances to establish and fund several schools. The Speed Art Museum may be his greatest legacy, though, as locals rave about its world-class collection. The primary focus of the museum’s holdings is the art of the Western world. Works by Rembrandt, Picasso, Cezanne, Matisse, and more are all on display here. In addition to the permanent collection, the Speed (as locals call it) hosts the popular Speed Concert Series and Art After Dark, a wild event where the doors of the museum are thrown open late for a can’t-miss gala. For kids, the Speed Art Museum's ArtSparks Interactive Family Gallery presents a wide variety of environmentally conscious hands-on exhibits.
