Thomas Edison House: The Inventor’s Home in Louisville

In 1866 Thomas Edison arrived in Louisville where he began working for Western Union. During his time in Louisville he stayed in a cottage in Butchertown. This cottage is now preserved as the Thomas Edison House.

At the museum, you can walk through the rooms and see what it was like to live in the nineteenth century. The museum has on display interesting artifacts that were found in the house. These include cylinder and disc phonographs and an Edison Kinetoscope, the first home motion picture projector. This place is a must for Edison fans and history buffs alike!

Thomas Edison House is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Headliners Music Hall: A Great Louisville Spot to Catch a Show

Headliners Music Hall is a Louisville favorite where you can catch established as well as up and coming music acts in Louisville. This historic music hall has welcomed performers such as Jimmy Eat World, Neko Case, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon and more. Fans love the size of the space, the elevated stage and the excellent acoustics. Keep in mind however that most shows are standing room only. Headliners is also home to the Louisville staging of The Moth where professionals and amateurs showcase the human experience through stories.

Bourbons Bistro: A Smooth Pour

Obviously Kentucky is known for its bourbon. Louisville does that tradition proud with Bourbons Bistro. Bourbons Bistro is a fine restaurant and bar that occupies a historic building dating back to 1877. Bourbons offers a staggering selection of 130 bourbon whiskeys for taste-savvy tipplers to sample. Many of these are rare vintages that you simply will never have the opportunity to try anywhere else. If you need something to soak up all this deliciousness, Bourbons Bistro's menu offers a well-selected assortment of southern food. Diners recommend the tender fried green tomatoes, the excellent spare ribs, and the pesto lobster grilled cheese. Bourbons burgers are also some of the best in the city. They're perfectly-grilled and topped with thick-cut bacon. There’s nothing fancy here, but everything that hits the table is executed to perfection. Bourbons's monthly bourbon dinners are popular events: the restaurant offers a special menu in which each course is paired with a whiskey.

Resolved to eat more healthfully? MyFitnessPal is one of the best calorie and nutrition trackers available for the iPhone. The app offers a large database of food items, making it easy to enter and track what you've eaten and to learn more about your diet over time. MyFitnessPal also syncs with a web app which you can access through your browser.

Growth
Growth is a simple app that help you track daily progress to whatever goals you set. The app creates daily checklists for each goal, then lets you monitor your progress. Whether you'd like to learn an instrument, write a book, or become an adept knitter, Growth can help you visualize your progress.

Evernote
If you'd to get organized and become more productive, Evernote can help. A flexible note-taking app that syncs in the cloud, Evernote helps make information like to do lists, documents, clippings from websites, and more readily accessible wherever you are. Some users have written guides to using Evernote in tandem with systems like Getting Things Done, and Evernote's blog occasionally offers tips for using the service most effectively.

Slugger Museum: Take A Swing

There are few pieces of sports equipment as iconic as the Louisville Slugger. That piece of fine American hardwood has been the official bat of Major League Baseball for over a century. These accoutrements of your hitting heroes are still made here in Louisville, Kentucky. And the Louisville Slugger Museum allows you to take a totally unique trip through baseball history. Entering the museum, he first thing you’ll notice is the enormous six-story bat leaning against the museum’s façade. At 68,000 pounds, it would take a Paul Bunyan to swing it! Inside you’ll find smaller, but no less historically important bats, including the very Slugger that Babe Ruth used to hit his last homer for the Yankees. A number of rotating exhibitions explore other key periods in baseball history. The tour also takes you through the factory the bats themselves are made. And when you finish up you even get a souvenir bat to take home with you!

Wild Eggs: Crack A Few

The Zell family has been serving up spectacular fresh breakfasts to lucky Kentuckians for generations, and their restaurant Wild Eggs has become one of the most popular spots for Louisville locals to start the day. If you can make it with eggs, it’s probably on the menu at Wild Eggs! Regulars rave about the spectacular frittatas and omelets. A favorite at Wild Eggs is the "border benedict," which boasts Green chili cheddar corn cakes, chorizo, poached eggs and queso fundido with sour cream and salsa. It's a fantastic update of the classic dish, giving it a South of the Border spin. Make sure to get a side of the homestyle potatoes – they are absolutely spectacular. If you’re not feeling eggs, Wild Eggs's menu does offer some sweet options, including great, fluffy pancakes and a Bananas Foster that's to die for. Prices here are reasonable, service is great, and you’ll want to come back to Wild Eggs again and again.

Jack Fry’s: A Punchy Plate

When the eponymous Jack Fry opened his place in 1933 (with the assistance of his wife Flossie), the restaurant quickly became a hangout for Louisville sportsmen and playboys who headed to the back room to place bets on the ponies. That indefinable quality has been carefully preserved for almost eighty years. The walls of Jack Fry’s are even lined with amazing photographs of those bygone days. Under the tutelage of executive chef Shawn Ward, the restaurant has recently re-established itself as one of Louisville’s best, with locals going wild about the romantic atmosphere and sensational food. The bar at Jack Fry's serves up one of the best martinis you’ll ever drink. Ice cold and perfectly shaken, it’s almost the Platonic ideal of the martini! The menu is New American classics executed with fantastic ingredients. Regulars at Jack Fry's rave about its chorizo-stuffed dates, sea bass, and spectacular steaks.
