Oishii Sushi: Wish For Fish

If you’ve got a hankering for some Japanese cuisine in Louisville, Oishii Sushi serves up some of the best in town. Step into Oishii and you’ll be immediately charmed by its modern décor, which is incredibly welcoming. Oishii's dining room isn’t big, but the staff keeps tables moving quickly, so you won’t have to wait long. The menu boasts standard appetizers and entrees, with locals raving about the agedashi tofu, the vegetable tempura and the succulent gyoza. The real draw at Oishii Sushi is (of course!) the fish, which is presented in generous, fresh portions. Many of the special rolls incorporate either mayonnaise or cream cheese, but there are plenty of other choices on the menu to enjoy. Sashimi is an exceptionally good value here, with a sizable plate providing plenty of fish for two.

Rivue: Take A Spin

Many restaurants feel like they need to have a gimmick in order to stand out. Louisville’s Rivue has a pretty unique one! Rivue features two rotating dining rooms, 25 floors above the streets of the city. The panoramic views of Louisville and the waterfront can’t be beat, but don’t think Rivue is just a one-trick pony. Once the food hits your table, you might not look at the view again until you swallow the last bite. Chef Tim Baker took over the kitchen in 2004 and since then he's shaped Rivue into one of Louisville’s most popular restaurants. Dishes like a delectable jumbo scallops appetizer served with a trio of sauces, a baccala chicken rolled in ham and served over lush cheese grits, and a great butterflied game hen all receive raves. After dessert, Rivue's complimentary candy cart stops by to add a sweet treat to the end of your meal.

Vincenzo’s Italian Restaurant: A Notch Above

Providing white tablecloth service and spectacular food to grateful diners for years, Vincenzo's Italian Restaurant is an incredibly swanky Italian joint, widely regarded to be one of the best eateries in Louisville. Chef Agostinio Gabriele is a master in the kitchen and his menu is excellently composed, with no glaring weaknesses. The first thing you’ll notice here is the service – it’s a cut above most local restaurants, with incredibly well-trained waiters who never seem to have an off day. Once you crack the menu at Vincenzo's, you’ll find a bevy of delights to tantalize your palate. The gnocchi come highly recommended – this sometimes tricky pasta are executed to absolute perfection. Meateaters rave about the filleto ripeno, a tender cut of beef tenderloin stuffed with Stilton cheese and wild mushroom sauce. For desserts, Vincenzo’s Italian Restaurant makes spectacular soufflés, but make sure to order one early, as it takes the kitchen some time to do it right. The wine list is extensive, if a bit expensive.

Wild Eggs: Crack A Few

The Zell family has been serving up spectacular fresh breakfasts to lucky Kentuckians for generations, and their restaurant Wild Eggs has become one of the most popular spots for Louisville locals to start the day. If you can make it with eggs, it’s probably on the menu at Wild Eggs! Regulars rave about the spectacular frittatas and omelets. A favorite at Wild Eggs is the "border benedict," which boasts Green chili cheddar corn cakes, chorizo, poached eggs and queso fundido with sour cream and salsa. It's a fantastic update of the classic dish, giving it a South of the Border spin. Make sure to get a side of the homestyle potatoes – they are absolutely spectacular. Jack Fry’s: A Punchy Plate

If you’re looking for a meal in Louisville steeped in some real history, step into Jack Fry’s! When the eponymous Jack Fry opened his place in 1933 (with the assistance of his wife Flossie), the restaurant quickly became a hangout for Louisville sportsmen and playboys who headed to the back room to place bets on the ponies. That indefinable quality has been carefully preserved for almost eighty years. The walls of Jack Fry’s are even lined with amazing photographs of those bygone days. Under the tutelage of executive chef Shawn Ward, the restaurant has recently re-established itself as one of Louisville’s best, with locals going wild about the romantic atmosphere and sensational food. The bar at Jack Fry's serves up one of the best martinis you’ll ever drink. Ice cold and perfectly shaken, it’s almost the Platonic ideal of the martini!
