Find In-Season Produce Near You With the NRDC’s Interactive Map

If your kitchen is stocked with organic produce, then you're probably already aware of the health and environmental benefits of eating local. Produce that's grown locally has less distance to travel to reach grocery stores, thereby reducing pollution caused by transporting the fruits or veggies across states—or in some cases, continents! What's more, locally grown produce is more flavorful and nutritious, oftentimes landing on grocery store shelves at the peak of ripeness. (Read this article by Michigan State University for more reasons to eat local.)

So you want to eat local, but you're not sure what's in season. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)'s Eat Local map can help! This interactive map makes it easy to see what fruits and veggies are at peak availability near you. Simply click your state for a list of in-season fruits and veggies separated by month. Click each hyperlinked vegetable and fruit for cooking tips and to learn about the produce's nutritional benefits!

Are You Washing Your Hands Correctly? Find Out Here!

Washing your hands thoroughly can help to prevent you from contacting diseases, reduce the risk of food borne illness, and can even stop you from spreading germs if you’re already sick. Here are a few tips that will show you the correct way to wash your hands.

  1. Apply soap and water. First, completely soak your hands with warm water. Apply as much soap as you need in order to cover both hands—remember, the more the better.
  2. Rub palms together. Vigorously rub your palms together in a circular motion to clean germs from the center of your hands.
  3. Clean between fingers. Clean the hard-to-reach places between your fingers by placing one hand on top of the other as if you were holding hands with another person. Rub the fingertips from one hand between the fingers of the other hand, and then vice versa.
  4. Clean fingernails. Rub the fingernails of one hand across the palm of the other hand to remove dirt and germs. Clasp the hands together with the backs of your fingers to the opposite palm, and then rub the hands back and forth.
  5. Rinse and dry. Rinse hands completely with water, and then dry them with a single-use paper towel. Don’t forget to use the towel to turn off the faucet in order to prevent contacting more germs, and then toss it away.

Chronic Oversleeper? Here’s How to Have More Energy in the Morning

No matter how many hours of sleep you get the night before, you always seem to wake up cranky, groggy, and plain old lethargic. If you’re the opposite of a morning person and just can’t seem to get it together when you first wake up, these effective tips will help to perk up your morning.

  1. Set your alarm to your favorite song. Hearing the funky beat of your favorite song is much more welcoming than hearing the blare of the alarm clock. Most newer models of alarm clocks offer features that enable you to play a song, and if you use your smartphone as an alarm, it’s even easier. Choose a song that’s upbeat and inspiring!
  2. Make the most of your morning coffee. Sure, drinking coffee in the morning isn’t the most innovative idea, but drinking it correctly is a whole different concept. To get the best results from that first jolt of caffeine, be sure to drink your coffee or tea within 15 minutes of waking up. This will help you to perform tasks like showering or eating breakfast with a little more pep in your step.
  3. Exercise after you wake up. This one requires a bit more discipline, but exercising in the morning is one of the best ways to feel more energetic for the rest of the day. Wake up an hour earlier and get those endorphins flowing.

Stop and Smell the Roses at the San Antonio Botanical Garden

San Antonio Botanical Garden is a 33-acre paradise that opened to the public in May of 1980. In addition to the foliage, there are a number of other attractions in the garden, including the Lucille Halsell Conservatory and the historic Sullivan Carriage House, which was moved brick by brick to the Garden and reassembled.

The Garden hosts a number of special events throughout the year, including a popular Shakespeare in the Park series of performances, plant sales, and a fun family Halloween parade.
