La Lou Bistro: Eclectic Tastes of the Mediterranean

The comfortably cozy dining room of La Lou Bistro may be reminiscent of a chic Parisian eatery, but the cuisine is purely that of the Mediterranean. Flavor is showcased in a variety of tender kebabs, served with sides of rice and ratatouille, a medley of sautéed vegetables, and the seafood paella (one of their specialties) is also well-regarded. Italian food specialties are represented in an array of hot brick-oven fired pizzas, including classic margarita pies and a signature La Lou pie topped with lump crab meat, cherry tomatoes and garlic.

La Lou Bistro is open daily for lunch and dinner, with a special brunch service on Sundays. During the warmer months, be sure to take advantage of their outside seating overlooking the picturesque Leesburg Town Hall Green where lucky weekend diners can take in the weekly Acoustic on the Green summer concert series.

Paradise Indian Cuisine: Herndon’s Passage to Indian Fare

Paradise Indian Cuisine offers what might be the best lunchtime buffet in Herndon for a mere $10. Constantly restocked with fresh food, you choose from a wide selection of authentic, flavorful options that will always be there because the buffet doesn’t change. If you opt out of the buffet or dine for dinner instead, Paradise offers a big menu with plenty of vegetarian options along with a decent selection of meats. The portions are so large that you’ll have enough for next day’s lunch. Paradise specializes in biryani, which are tender meats marinated in exotic spices and then mixed with green peppers, ginger, and onion, added to perfectly seasoned Basmati rice, and finally steamed together. There’s often a short wait as it gets busy, especially during lunchtime. The atmosphere is relaxed with its dim lighting and televisions that play Bollywood music videos.

Charcoal Kabob House: Tasty Mediterranean Fare

Just a short trip from BLVD l Loudoun Station in Herndon, Charcoal Kabob House is a Mediterranean restaurant that is famous among regulars for its signature kabobs. The tender lamb kabob seems to be the favorite kabob, but Charcoal Kabob offers other quality meat selections like chicken and beef. If you order a kabob, you also get vegetable curry, freshly baked naan bread, Basmati rice, and a salad. The prices may be a bit high, but you’re getting a large portion of authentic, quality food. Customers rave about the perfectly seasoned chickpea side and creamy, refreshing yogurt dip. A twenty-minute wait is common for Charcoal Kabob, but the cooks prepare dishes with a tandoor and use hickory charcoal (hence the name!) for an authentic, healthy taste. If you don’t have a lot of time, skip the kabob and instead choose the curry. It's all worth the wait!

Thai Luang: Herndon Thai Cuisine

At Thai Luang Restaurant, you’re instantly greeted with a smile and a staff that's eager to help. Start with one of its two imported bottled beers or a Thai iced tea, which are all refreshing while you’re enjoying some spicy food. Its signature dish is the crispy duck with sweet basil stir fried with garlic and chili sauce. For $20, it’s a large portion, so it’s best to share with a friend. Be wary of the level of spiciness though — the heat is increased here, so ‘Thai hot’ means very hot! Lunchtime is a busy time for Thai Luang, so you might encounter a short wait. Lunch comes with a traditional spicy lemongrass soup and a spring roll and along with your entrée, that is plenty of food to enjoy.

Guapo’s: A Herndon Spot for Big Flavors

Looking for tasty Tex-Mex food in Herndon? Check out Guapo’s Restaurant. The rotisserie chicken is the signature dish and the chicken is perfectly seasoned and juicy. The combo includes a choice of rotisserie (most customers are satisfied with a quarter chicken), a salad, Guapo’s sauce, and your choice of fried potatoes, corn tortillas, or for an additional charge, fried yucca. Everyone who dines at Guapo’s loves the fried yucca with its crispy exterior and airy interior that pairs well with Guapo’s sauces, especially the green sauce if you enjoy a spicy kick. Be sure to cherish every bite of fried yucca though, because an order only comes with five. Guapo’s makes you feel welcome as soon as you step in the door with its inviting, lively atmosphere. It can be busy during lunch and dinnertime, so the wait might have you thinking about ordering a larger portion of rotisserie chicken.

Zeffirelli Ristorante Italiano: Herndon’s Italian Kitchen

A perfect place for a date or a special occasion for a large party, Zeffirelli Ristorante Italiano’s atmosphere is charming, cozy, and makes you feel like you’re in an Italian family’s living room. The wine list is extensive, the staff is acknowledgeable about its wines, and you can get a good bottle of wine for a reasonable price. The specialty here is the veal chop, which is a bit pricey, but you’re assured a juicy, tender piece of meat with sauce that perfectly complements the assortment of flavors. You can get huge portions of food for both lunch and dinner, but if you plan to have dinner, be sure to make a reservation as it’s always packed after 6 o’clock. Save room for dessert because Zeffirelli boasts some delicious Italian favorites like a classic tiramisu and mixed berries with a light Italian custard.

TurCuisine: Herndon Mediterranean Cuisine

Located in Herndon, Virginia, TurCuisine is winning the hearts and stomachs of diners with a tasty array of Turkish dishes served up in a modern, upscale setting in the Worldgate Shopping Center. Start off with an appetizer like creamy hummus and pita bread, or Kizartma, fried zucchini and eggplant in a garlic yogurt sauce. Better yet, get the Meze Tabagi, a sampler plate that lets you try a variety of regional dishes. Entrees include the house specialty Doner Kebab, grilled lamb, and beef served with rice and veggies, Beef Shish Kebabs, Cyprus Chicken, and Manti, which is a sort of ravioli with the influences of Mediterranean cuisine. Stop in at the bar for a cocktail and a nice variety of small plates. TurCuisine is open every day for lunch and dinner.

Kumo Sushi: Great Sushi, Great Value

In Herndon since 2010, Kumo Sushi has already gained tons of loyal customers who call it their favorite sushi restaurant in the D.C. Metro area. The décor is contemporary, trendy, and bright (in colors and lighting.) When you order, you’ll notice the lengthy menu as it prides itself on experimental sushi rolls, which most customers prefer to try over the traditional rolls. The sashimi rolls are beautifully crafted and are always fresh. Kumo Sushi also serves delicious fatty tuna, which most sushi restaurants don’t have. There are also numerous options for non-sushi lovers, including the Bento boxes. The contemporary feel also finds itself in Kumo Sushi’s presentation of dishes. The cooks artfully construct the dishes and some are even decorated with orchids. Kumo Sushi is on the expensive side, but you’re getting fresh, quality food in decent-sized portions.
