Some of the most authentic international cuisine lives behind the simplest of storefronts. Ruby's Taqueria proves this rule. Housed behind a humble porch with wooden latticework for railings, the Sunnyvale spot serves some of the most popular Mexican cuisine in the area. Regulars cite al pastor burritos—stuffed with barbecue pork—as the tastiest item on the menu. But they also love the Vampiros tacos and the Super Burrito.

Colorful photos of each dish hang over the counter, so you can see your food before you order it, a helpful detail if you aren't quite sure what each contains. Just below, shelves full of various hot sauces showcase the spice that eaters can add to their dishes, should they deem them not sufficiently fiery.
