Travieso Winery: Great Grapes
February 5, 2013 | sack
California is well-known as the heart of American winemaking, and new wineries are popping up all over the state. Campbell is no exception, and locals rave about Travieso Winery. Opened by Ray Sliter and Mats Hagstrom in 1999 with a half ton of grapes and a used barrel, the winery sources exceptional grapes and ages them in their microwinery in this out-of-the-way location in an industrial park. Travieso wines are absolutely full of personality, from the unique labels to the delicious taste. Some of their most popular wines include the El Chupacabras red, a smoky, well-balanced glass named after the legendary Mexican goat-eating creature, as well as the big-bodied El Rey cabernet sauvignon. The flavors are complex but approachable, making them great for tastings, and the staff are incredibly friendly and happy to talk about their process. This is truly one of the area's hidden gems!
