You'll find the evidence in the shop's affordable prices and the children's section, where everything is essentially "free." You're asked to bring a gently used children's item to donate, and then you're welcome to take an item from the kid's section free of charge.
Although Sam and his business really get nothing out of the barter, the satisfaction of helping families in need is more than enough payment. The rest of the clothing, furniture, accessories, vinyl records, and other odds and ends are all affordably priced. You should be able to find a pair of jeans that fit perfectly for about $7 or a cute summery top somewhere in the neighborhood of $4 or $5.
