Ray’s Deli and Tavern: A Petaluma Institution Since 1947

May 12, 2015 | sack

What was once home to a mechanic's shop and a car dealership now houses Ray’s Deli and Tavern. That's not to say, though, that Ray's is a new addition to the local landscape. To the contrary, Ray's is an area institution; it's been in business since 1947, when it was just one of many grocery store-meets-taverns here in Petaluma. Nowadays, the competition has faded away, and Ray's carries on the deli-bar concept solo.

Sandwiches are the draw here, with many regular diners proclaiming that they're the best in town. You'll encounter traditional deli favorites on the chalkboard menu (Reuben, hot pastrami, French dip), but Ray's keeps things modern with meat-free offerings that cater to the vegetarian crowd, as well as signature sandwiches that combine ordinary ingredients in unexpected ways (go for the Popeye sandwich). If you prefer, sidle up to the wood-paneled bar to sip a locally-sourced craft beer or a glass of wine.

Ray’s Deli and Tavern is open daily. Between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, the deli welcomes local music acts to its humble stage.
