Low-Cost Ways to Transform Your Living Space

Redecorating projects are fun in theory, but the actual process can be stressful and time-consuming. Here are a few affordable ways to transform your living space without much effort at all.

  1. Hang an eclectic collection on the walls. While the gallery wall is a tried-and-true favorite, you can create some visual interest in your space by hanging a collection of just about anything on the walls. Try a few vintage silver serving trays from the local thrift store, or use old postcards from places where you’ve traveled.
  2. Change the color scheme. Rely on textiles to give your space an instant makeover. Changing the color scheme of the pillows on your bed or the textiles in your bathroom can have a major impact on the feel of the room.
  3. Add plants. Not only do plants freshen the air in your home, they also add a pop of color and visual interest that can’t be replicated outside of nature. Choose low-light plants meant for indoor spaces.
  4. Invest in a large rug. Choose a large, colorful rug that draws your eye to the center of the room.

Climb to Your Full Potential at The Delaware Rock Gym

Even if you've never so much as heard the term "belay," you're welcome to climb at The Delaware Rock Gym near Newark. Of course, you'll have to learn the basics first. Take a beginner class at this public climbing gym (the only one of its kind in the entire state) and you'll know everything you need to scale its 11,300 square feet of faux rock faces.

Since the climbing walls are constructed using steel instead of wood, they're uniquely contoured to create realistic, unusual surfaces—just like the kind you'd encounter in real life. Go for a trial climb on Saturdays or Sundays at 10 a.m. They're designed specifically for someone who's never climbed before, so one of the rock gym's highly trained staff members will stick with you every step of the way—from the ground. They'll serve as your guide, anchor, and belayer. The intro climbing classes are also held on Saturdays and Sundays if you need to learn the fundamentals first, and they kick off at 11 a.m.

Eating on the Sofa Is Encouraged at Newark’s Ali Baba

When you walk into Ali Baba, you're immediately greeted with a decision: standard seating, or something a bit more fun? In the back dining room, Ali Baba recreates Middle Eastern homes with sofa seating. In the front, however, you're welcome to dine with more traditional American tables and chairs. No matter where you sit, one aspect of your meal remains the same: the fresh Middle Eastern cuisine.

Ali Baba especially earns raves for its different renditions of chicken. The Moroccan chicken comes highly recommended by regular customers, and it comes two ways: with a spicy harisa cumin sauce or lemon and olives. A duo of Moroccan-style salads round out the dish (carrot and green). The dajaj mashwy is another popular chicken dish, a recreation of a typical homemade eat. The chicken marinates and then bakes to golden and juicy, at which point chefs set it atop a bed of rice and drizzle it with garlic sauce. Pick tabouli salad or hummus on the side. You can also dig into a meat kebab, enjoy a plate piled with different vegetarian noshes, or try a pita wrap at Ali Baba.

Behold the Nutritional Power of Edamame at Soybean Asian Grille

Soybean Asian Grille not only touts the health benefits of its namesake not only on its website, but also in practically every dish its chefs serve. Loaded with complete protein (which you typically only find in meat), calcium and iron, and even fiber, soybeans are a staple in Asian. They are at Soybean Asian Grille, too.

Launch your meal with the edamame, which is simply a plate of steamed soybeans. Or nibble on the smorgasbord that is the soybean sampler. It's loaded with Thai spring rolls, curry puffs, gyoza, rocket shrimp, dim sum, and, of course, edamame. When it comes to the main course, many Yelp reviewers the pad kee mao. Its broad, stir-fried rice noodles mingle with bell pepper, onion, chili, Thai basil, and egg in the aromatic dish. You can also opt for a spicy curry over jasmine rice, something hot and fresh from the wok (like mango fish), or a fried rice bowl.

Check Out These Creative Uses for Wallpaper

If the thought of adding wallpaper to your home makes you cringe, you may want to rethink your opinions on this seemingly outdated wall covering. There are a number of creative uses for wallpaper that have nothing to do with your walls, and don’t worry: there’s no outdated paisley print here.

  1. Line a bookcase. If you have a hand-me-down bookcase that’s a bit of an eyesore, dress it up with a fun, colorful wallpaper backdrop. Simply remove the shelves and stick on a solid or printed wallpaper that goes with the rest of the room’s decor.
  2. Line drawers. Instead of lining your drawers with plain old drawer liners, get a bit more creative by lining them with leftover wallpaper.
  3. Dress up a dresser. Cover an entire dresser, the sides, or just the drawer fronts to bring a bit of color and a pop of pattern to your bedroom.
  4. Transform tray tables. If you want to add chic side tables to your living room but you’re on a bit of a budget, make over affordable tray tables using wallpaper. Simply stick the wallpaper to the tops of the tables, then create an attractive vignette using books, a lamp, or a few romantic candles.
  5. Frame it. If you have a very small amount of wallpaper that you love, turn it into a piece of DIY art using a simple, store-bought frame.

Bring Your Four-Legged Friends to Talley Day Park

Talley Day Park brings the people of Wilmington together in the fresh air with its slew of features and amenities. Perhaps the most prominent is the Talley Day Bark Park, a beloved dog park (it was one of the first fenced dog parks in the county). Split into two separate areas for larger dogs and smaller dogs, Talley Day Bark Park has water fountains to refill your puppy's bowl, bags for waste removal, and usually plenty of other furry friends to play with. According to one Yelp reviewer, the small dog portion of the park is mostly shaded, making it an ideal spot during the summer.

Elsewhere in Talley Day Park, humans can enjoy other features, including the colorful playground and shady pavilions. The Brandywine Hundred Library is even technically right in the park, so you can go grab a good book and bring it back outside to read in the grass.
