More than one Yelp reviewer deems the yellow sauce at The Chicken House highly addictive, and others urge new customers to "use it on everything, get extra even." That's because the yellow sauce features a unique blend of Peruvian spices that make The Chicken House's birds even more enticing.

Prepared in the traditional way—marinated with eclectic spices and roasted to juicy and tender—the poultry at The Chicken House is obviously a big seller. But it's far from the only thing on the menu. The Chicken House dishes out a full array of Peruvian fare, including beef, seafood, pork, and even Peruvian barbecue. Try the barbecue smorgasbord known as the parillada de la casa, a hodgepodge of grilled chicken, pork, sausage, and steak with chunks of cassava, potato, and bananas. In the back dining room, Ali Baba recreates Middle Eastern homes with sofa seating. In the front, however, you're welcome to dine with more traditional American tables and chairs. No matter where you sit, one aspect of your meal remains the same: the fresh Middle Eastern cuisine.

Ali Baba especially earns raves for its different renditions of chicken. The Moroccan chicken comes highly recommended by regular customers, and it comes two ways: with a spicy harisa cumin sauce or lemon and olives. A duo of Moroccan-style salads round out the dish (carrot and green). The dajaj mashwy is another popular chicken dish, a recreation of a typical homemade eat. The chicken marinates and then bakes to golden and juicy, at which point chefs set it atop a bed of rice and drizzle it with garlic sauce. Pick tabouli salad or hummus on the side. Brewed Awakenings is a local Newark coffee house that earns high marks for quality and ambiance. The coffee itself is fresh and aromatic, and the skilled baristas do a great job at making all the standard espresso drinks with care and precision.

The shop's atmosphere is half-library, half-living room, with bookshelf-lined walls and a pile of board games. Feel free to pluck a novel off the shelf and spend a few hours reading; you certainly won't be the only person doing so, as Brewed Awakenings is also popular with studying students who hunker down with their books, computers, and notes. If you get hungry while you're there, try a turkey wrap with cheese or hummus, or ask about the soup of the day. If you've got a sweet tooth, you might indulge it with a pastry or cookie from the display case.
