"Go play outside." That's the motto of Shank's Mare Outfitters, a local company that exists to "spotlight the cultural, environmental and outdoor recreation opportunities in our area."

So how does Shank's Mare do it? For one, this Wrightsville company, which occupies a 19th-century former general store on the banks Susquehanna River, remains open year round as a retailer of outdoor gear. Depending on the season, a stop into Shank's Mare's retail store might reveal the equipment, apparel, and accessories needed for cross-country skiing, fishing, paddling, kayaking, hiking, and other adventurous pursuits.

Shank's Mare Outfitters also operates as a provider of tours and instruction in paddlesports, yoga, and hiking, and the company is known to host a nature-centric kids' camp in the summer. Now that it's officially spring, you might consider signing up for one of Shank's Mare's guided tours. Peruse the online calendar, and choose between kayak and stand-up paddleboard classes, or stick to dry land with a hike through the river hills.
