Dairy Palace: Sweet Treats in New Castle from Spring through September

There’s something about a neighborhood ice cream shop that can’t fail to bring back the good memories. This family-owned and operated stand is a New Castle institution. Generations of kids have spent their summer evenings having dessert at the Dairy Palace, idly enjoying a giant-sized ice cream cone doused in rainbow sprinkles. The ice cream is rich, creamy, and flavorful, whether you get it in a cone, a sundae, a float, or a shake. The malted milkshakes are expertly-made, and the banana splits are perfect for sharing.

With so many tasty treats, the Dairy Palace is more than just an ice cream shop – it’s a touchstone of the New Castle community.

Rasa Sayang: Malaysian Cuisine and More

Rasa Sayang takes you on an upscale tour through Indian, Chinese, and Thai cuisines before ending up with Malaysian fare. It might be unfamiliar, but it’s a palace of delights. The calamari—battered with Malaysian spices and doused with green and red pepper hot sauce before frying—packs a memorable punch. Manager Aaron Kwan says that on a scale of one to ten, the heat rates a six, but we recommend keeping a sweet Lychee tea (or two) on hand. Char kway teow (flat rice noodles stir fried with chillies, belachan, prawns, cockles, bean sprouts and chives) is the unmissable specialty of the house. The dessert list is disappointingly short, and prices are high for the area; but they’re justified by the remarkably consistent quality. Service is smart and attentive, and they’re used to kids—little ones have their own menu and get covered cups with straws. Rasa Sayang is open seven days a week, and takeout is available.

Capers & Lemons: Blending Old & New Italian Cuisine

Rustic Italian craftsmanship meets New World verve at Capers & Lemons. The look is casual and classy, with the long, gleaming bar, towering wine wall and warmly colored dining room promising sleek Italian cuisine, in touch with its roots but looking to the future. That’s exactly what you get. Cannelloni—handmade daily like all the pasta—burst with a lush mixture of marinated ground beef, chicken, and sausage. The accompanying cream sauce is almost absurdly light. Crisp, inventive woodstone pizzas conjure up an Umbrian farmhouse, but you won’t find checked tablecloths or candles in wine bottles here. This is Italian for grown-ups who live in the moment and want more. Capers & Lemons is open every day.

How to Safely Exercise Outdoors During the Summer

Even if you’re a very fit person, exercising outdoors in hot summer weather can be dangerous. Unless you take the necessary precautions, the heat and humidity can cause dehydration, dizziness, and exhaustion. Here are a few smart tips to help you exercise safely outside all summer long.

  • Stay hydrated. This one may seem obvious, but dehydration is the leading cause of illness and injury during hot weather exercise. Be sure to drink a lot of water not only during and after exercise, but also beforehand to fuel your body for your workout.
  • Choose smart times. Because the sun is lower (and so is the temperature) during the morning and evening, these are the smartest times to exercise outdoors.
  • Wear the right clothes. While you might wear sweatpants to exercise outdoors in the fall, you should invest in something lightweight and absorbent in the summer. Try synthetic fabrics like Spandex and Lycra, as these wick away moisture.
  • Listen to your body. Even if you’ve only been running for 10 minutes, that might be too much for your body in the dog days of summer. If you start to feel lightheaded and dizzy while exercising, make sure that you stop or slow down, no matter how long it’s been.

How to Make Any Space Feel Like Home

Making your space feel like a home can be a little overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be difficult. All you need to do is add your own personality to your space and make it feel more cozy. Follow these tips to make your space feel more comfortable and homey.

  • Decorate your space with people and places that you love and with items that have meaning to you. Use artwork that features places or maps of places that have a special meaning to you and your family.
  • A simple positive message can have a way of making you feel good and really bring up your mood. Use art that features a quote or phrase and hang it somewhere where you will be sure to see it every day.
  • Place a lot of throw pillows on your couch or bed. These will always make you feel nice and cozy. A throw blanket can give you the same effect as well.
  • Add a rug or two to your dining or living room area. A rug will make your space feel more complete and less empty or bare.
  • Add a lamp on your bedside table or on your desk to add a little bit of light to your home. If your space is too dark, you will never achieve that cozy feeling.
