Chef-Approved Tips for Cleaning a Cast Iron Skillet

The trusty cast iron skillet is a mainstay in any home chef’s kitchen, but it’s also one of the most confusing items when it comes to its care. Should you wash it with water? Try a salt scrub? These chef-approved tips will show you exactly how to clean your cast iron skillet properly — and tell you which techniques you should never use!

  • Never use soap. No matter what you do, never soak your skillet in soapy water. This removes the natural, nonstick coating that comes from frequent use and oil absorption.
  • Clean it while still warm. This makes it much easier to remove food particles.
  • Use a stiff brush. Using a stiff brush made of natural materials that won’t melt, run the skillet under hot water and give it a good scrubbing. This will remove food without stripping it of its natural oils and seasonings.
  • Sprinkle on salt. To remove particularly built-up food particles, sprinkle coarse Kosher salt on the surface of the pan. Scrub it dry, and then run water over the surface to remove the salt.
  • Dry. Dry your pan using a clean towel or by letting it sit on the stove on low heat.
  • Season. Finally, apply a light coating of oil or shortening to lock in that lovely seasoning.

Lucky’s Coffee Shop: Sticky Buns That Shouldn’t Be Missed

When it comes to breakfast, the chefs at Lucky's Coffee Shop don't believe in doing things halfway. They join the countless American chefs before them who championed sweets for breakfast at classic mid-20th-century diners across the country. Stacks of sweet French toast, syrupy waffles, and fluffy pancakes adorn the tables at Lucky's Coffee Shop in Wilmington.

Many customers opt for the French toast, perhaps because its fresh bread comes directly from nearby Le Bus Bakery. The French toast includes strips of crispy bacon and home fries (or fresh fruit, if you prefer), as does all of the "standard breakfast stuff." If you choose pancakes, add candied pecans and bananas, blueberries, or chocolate chips to make the stack truly decadent. You can also opt for am omelet or egg sandwich and breakfast, but no matter what you order, don't forget to add one of Lucky's popular stick buns. If you come for lunch or dinner, try a burger, sandwich, or diner entree like country fried steak.

How to Create a Chic and Stylish Bar Cart

Bar carts are the types of finishing touches that add a major pop of designer flair to any room in the home. From the living room to the dining room, adding a well-curated bar cart will really give your home the type of 1950s style that is right on trend. Here are just a few tips for creating a truly chic bar cart.

  1. Start with the perfect cart. Scour flea markets and thrift stores for an authentic vintage bar cart. If you can’t find one there, try purchasing one at an affordable furniture store or even using a small three-tiered bookshelf.
  2. Choose your spirits. The types of spirits that you add to your cart really depend on your personal preferences. Investing in three or four bottles of common spirits like vodka, gin, and bourbon is a good place to start.
  3. Add your glassware. Next, invest in new or secondhand sets of wine glasses, low tumblers and martini glasses. You may even want to add decanters to fill with mixers or to trade out unattractive liquor bottles.
  4. Add the accessories. Fill a glass jar with stirrers, add a small cutting board for slicing lemons and limes and even add stacks of mixology books for the finishing touches.
