Safe Homes for the Holidays

The holiday season is now upon us! Evergreen Apartment Group would like to extend our very best wishes to all our wonderful residents for a fantastic holiday season and a happy, healthy and successful New Year. Thank you for choosing to call an Evergreen Community home… we love and appreciate our residents!

Many of our residents will be decorating their homes for the holidays. Christmas trees are a traditional and beautiful part of decoration for the holiday season. But we do need your help and cooperation with the following:

  • Getting your tree into your apartment: Unfortunately, some tenants make a mess getting their tree into their apartment. When you bring your tree into your building, please be careful not to bang your tree into walls, windows or doors. Obviously, such banging can do damage to the paint, drywall and wood. Please also make sure to pick up any needles that fall off your tree in the hallways. Do not allow sap to drip inside the buildings.
  • Once your tree is in your apartment: Please place a sheet or plastic underneath the tree and limbs. This will protect your carpet from sap and the needles of the tree.
  • Beware of Fire Hazards: Please do a THOROUGH INSPECTION of any electrical decorations to make sure they are safe and in good working condition. DO NOT use any electrical decorations with exposed/frayed wires or loose bulb connections. ALL electrical decorations MUST be UL Listed. Don’t overload outlets. Please keep your tree well-watered. A dried up tree is a dangerous fire hazard. Never leave lit candles unattended in your apartment. You must have active (paid) renter’s insurance coverage at all times as required by the Rental Agreement and test your smoke detector(s).
  • After the holiday season is over: Please wrap your tree in a sheet of plastic. Take care as you move the tree out of your apartment & out of the building. Place your wrapped tree beside (not inside or in front) any of the dumpsters.

Unfortunately, the holiday season can also be a time of difficulty and desperation for those less fortunate. Please join us in assisting those less fortunate and use good judgment to avoid being victimized during the holiday season. Please review the information below:

  • Apartment Angels Charity: Evergreen Apartment Group is proud to be a founding member of the Apartment Angels Charity Program. Evergreen has donated over $100,000.00 to house homeless families at Evergreen communities through the Apartment Angels Charity Program. For more information, please visit http://www.daaonline.org/page/apartment-angels.html.
  • Never leave valuables in plain sight inside your vehicle: Any gifts you receive or purchase should never be left in your car… it is an invitation for someone to break-in.
  • Never invite individuals into your apartment that you don’t previously have a relationship with: A common scam is for an individual to knock on your door and then ask to borrow something or try to sell you something. If you invite them into your home, they have the opportunity to case your home for valuables. Even if the individual is a neighbor, never allow someone into your home unless you already have an established relationship. Make sure that all your doors and windows have locks in good working order and all locks are securely shut. If you have any problems with any of your locks, contact the Rental Office immediately.
  • Be aware of phone/email/internet scams: Never purchase something over the phone or internet from an unsolicited caller/email/web site or from any company that you have not heard of previously. Never give out bank account information or credit card information over the phone or over the web on an unsecure site.

Gaudiello’s Italian Hoagies and Steaks: Fresh Cheesesteaks and Italian Sammies

Gaudiello's Italian Hoagies and Steaks may not have much to offer in the way of ambience, but that's just fine with its regular customers. After all, it's not the atmosphere that has kept Gaudiello's in business since 1982. The fresh cuts of ribeye steak, authentic Italian cold cuts, and just-baked Liscio rolls earn that honor.

This old school hoagie joint might be best known for its cheesesteaks. Just because a state line stands between Gaudiello's and Philadelphia doesn't mean chefs have any trouble crafting and authentic sandwich. They use strips of hot, fresh ribeye steak to craft their classic cheesesteak, mushroom cheesesteak, and chicken cheesesteak. You can also opt for a cold hoagie, such as the Italian special with all the cold cuts you can imagine, or the simpler ham and cheese hoagie.

Southeast Kitchen: Don’t Miss the Drunken Noodles

You may have never dug into a papaya salad before, but in Southeast Asia, the salad (known as "som tum") the salad is a staple. A vibrant blend of green papaya, palm sugar, tomatoes, and chili-lime sauce, the sweet-tangy salad comes tossed with your choice of shrimp, crab, or vegetarian protein. The papaya salad epitomizes Southeast Kitchen's spectrum of Asian fusion fare, but it's far from your only option.

If you heed customer reviews, you'll try the Drunken Noodles. The classic entree showcases thick rice noodles smothered with a blend of coconut milk, roasted red chili paste, Thai basil, and herbs. Enjoy yours with tofu and veggies on top, chicken, beef, or shrimp. The chicken basil also comes highly recommended. It's composed of stir-fried chunks of chicken tinged with sweet basil, onion, chili paste, and bell peppers, all piled on top of a bed of rice.

Picnic, Bird-Watch or Fish at Brandywine Creek State Park

At an impressive 933 acres, it's no wonder that Brandywine Creek State Park plays host to such a huge spectrum of activities. Some of the activities are simple, like enjoying the sights and aromas in the Tulip Tree Woods. One of Delaware's first nature preserves, this grove of tulip poplar dates back nearly 200 years. So does the Freshwater Marsh, where bluebirds flit to and fro and wildflowers thrive.

You can also go bird-watching at the park, which is home to more than bluebirds. Many types of hawks soar overhead, so keep an eye out. If you're interested in fishing, Brandywine Creek teems with bluegill, crappie, and small mouth bass, while Wilsons Run has trout. Near the lakes there are 14 miles' worth of trails. They're an ideal spot to go for a run or a hike, or to capture a special photograph. Once you're done, spread out a blanket on one of the lawns and read a book, fly a kite, or have a picnic.

Longwood Gardens: There’s Always Something in Bloom

Longwood Gardens aren't just another set of glorified flower beds; this botanical oasis is a masterpiece from start to finish. The land that once housed the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, and then Quaker farmers, has transformed into a sprawling garden that looks more like a work of art than a work of careful landscaping. That's exactly how founder Pierre S. du Pont envisioned it; to be something "inspiring, meaningful, and beautiful," according to Longwood Gardens' website.

So if you've been wondering what the largest collection of exhibit mums looks like, head to Longwood Gardens. These mums are in full bloom in early November. Throughout the year, other gardens come alive, like the Meadow Garden with its ever-present birds and bees. The Orangery remains breathtaking year-round since it's house inside a greenhouse, and you've probably never seen dome-shaped flowering bushing or rainbow-toned flowerbeds quite like these before.
