The Skinny on Fats: 5 Facts You Need to Know

When it comes to losing weight and maintaining a healthy diet, calories aren’t the only things that you should be concerned with. Fats are an essential part of a healthy eating plan, but if consumed in excess they can also be very dangerous. Here are five key facts about fats.

  1. There are four main types of fats: saturated fats, trans fats, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. As a general rule, saturated fats and trans fats are the “bad” fats, and they should be avoided.
  2. All fats contain nine calories per gram, no matter which type of fat it is. Just because monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are better for you, they can still cause you to gain weight just as quickly as the “bad” fats if not limited.
  3. Fats are necessary because they promote cell growth, protect your organs, and give your body energy.
  4. Even if a pre-packaged food is labeled “trans fat-free,” it might still contain saturated fats, and vice versa. Real, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean meats are always a healthier choice.
  5. Fats are a major part of a healthy diet, depending on which foods you choose. Things like vegetable oils, nuts, fish, legumes, avocados, and low-fat dairy products are good sources of healthy fats.

The Delaware Apartment Association’s Apartment Angels Program Houses U.S. Veteran and Son at Evergreen Apartments at Riverfront Heights!

Evergreen Apartment Group has been a part of the Delaware Apartment Association's Apartment Angels charity since its founding. Evergreen Apartment Group President and CEO, Kevin Wolfgang, started the charity when it was realized that there was a solution to help those who had found themselves in a temporary hardship and in need of housing, and to fill vacant apartments. The hope is that six months of donated rent by the participating apartment company will help a person and/or family get back on their feet and become a long-term renter. Evergreen Apartment Group has really been a pioneer and the leader in the multi-family industry in Delaware with regard to philanthropic engagement, and we are happy to participate in another cycle of helping Delaware families, this time, a Veteran’s family. This also marks a significant milestone for the Apartment Angels program. Since the program was founded and established in 2010, we have now donated more than $300,000 in housing grants.

Celeste is a single mom and a Veteran, who came upon hard times when she was in a terrible accident. Celeste and her son are the newest residents at Evergreen Apartments at Riverfront Heights, and we couldn’t be happier to have her. Like all applicants to the program, there is a multi-tiered screening process as well as an interview. Celeste seemed like a perfect fit for our Apartment Angels program as well as our Riverfront Heights community! She has family members that live in nearby neighborhoods of Wilmington, including an Aunt only a block from the Riverfront Heights property. Her son will be starting school in Downtown Wilmington, just minutes from Evergreen Apartments at Riverfront Heights, so this community is an ideal for their family. For more information about how to apply to the DAA’s Apartment Angels program, please visit the website: http://www.daaonline.org/apartment-angels/

Juliana’s Kitchen: Authentic Peruvian Cuisine

When you arrive at Juliana's Kitchen you'll realize this Latin American restaurant feels more like a home than a commercial space, and as you step inside you'll see that there are only four or five tables. In other words, dining at Juliana's is an intimate, special experience that mimics being an honored guest in someone's home. Your food will likely be cooked by Juliana herself, and she may even come out of the kitchen to greet and chat with you. Her husband, Edwin, will be happy to explain any of the dishes you're unfamiliar with, and to make suggestions based on your tastes.

Yelp reviewers say the bistec apanado with rice and beans is tender and well seasoned, and seafood lovers recommend the spicy, citrusy ceviche mixto, which combines octopus, fish, mussels, and shrimp. Best of all, portions are generous and prices are reasonable.
