Gaudiello’s Italian Hoagies and Steaks: Fresh Cheesesteaks and Italian Sammies

Gaudiello's Italian Hoagies and Steaks may not have much to offer in the way of ambience, but that's just fine with its regular customers. After all, it's not the atmosphere that has kept Gaudiello's in business since 1982. The fresh cuts of ribeye steak, authentic Italian cold cuts, and just-baked Liscio rolls earn that honor.

This old school hoagie joint might be best known for its cheesesteaks. Just because a state line stands between Gaudiello's and Philadelphia doesn't mean chefs have any trouble crafting and authentic sandwich. They use strips of hot, fresh ribeye steak to craft their classic cheesesteak, mushroom cheesesteak, and chicken cheesesteak. You can also opt for a cold hoagie, such as the Italian special with all the cold cuts you can imagine, or the simpler ham and cheese hoagie.

Southeast Kitchen: Don’t Miss the Drunken Noodles

You may have never dug into a papaya salad before, but in Southeast Asia, the salad (known as "som tum") the salad is a staple. A vibrant blend of green papaya, palm sugar, tomatoes, and chili-lime sauce, the sweet-tangy salad comes tossed with your choice of shrimp, crab, or vegetarian protein. The papaya salad epitomizes Southeast Kitchen's spectrum of Asian fusion fare, but it's far from your only option.

If you heed customer reviews, you'll try the Drunken Noodles. The classic entree showcases thick rice noodles smothered with a blend of coconut milk, roasted red chili paste, Thai basil, and herbs. Enjoy yours with tofu and veggies on top, chicken, beef, or shrimp. The chicken basil also comes highly recommended. It's composed of stir-fried chunks of chicken tinged with sweet basil, onion, chili paste, and bell peppers, all piled on top of a bed of rice.

Washington Street Ale House: 24 Microbrews On Tap

There are more than 24 craft beers on tap at Washington Street Ale House, and that's exactly how founder Darius Mansoory envisioned it. When he set out to open Washington Street Ale House back in 1997, it was with the idea that the eatery would offer plenty of microbrews in addition to its New American fare.

The Ale House continues to do just that today, pour pints of ever-changing craft beers. A few you might find on tap include Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale, Victory Dirt Wolf, and Yards Philadelphia Pale Ale. Many of the beers are brewed in neighboring states, and they all showcase unique and robust flavors.

Once you've picked your pint, you should check out the equally impressive food menu. Yelp reviews recommend the chorizo meatloaf burger with a side of sweet potato fries and the creative cheesesteak spring rolls.

Don’t Miss the Meat-Free Amexem Burger at Drop Squad Kitchen

Drop Squad Kitchen's founders took some liberties in retelling the story of a 1994 Spike Lee movie that inspired its name. Drop Squad depicted a community attempting to spread its philosophy, which is just what the staff at Drop Squad Kitchen does in every vegan dish. The mother-daughter duo behind Drop Squad Kitchen bans meat, using only healthy, local, and often organic ingredients to craft plant-based dishes.

Try the popular Amexem burger if you're new to vegan fare. It's on the list of "fingerlickers," aka sandwiches. In lieu of beef, chefs craft the patty from black beans, wild and black rice, and a signature blend of herbs and spices. The traditional lettuce, onion, tomato, and pickles go on top, along with the house's Village dressing. Instead of a bun, the patty gets stuffed inside of a whole-grain pita. For something lighter, try one of the soups or salads. They're equally as inventive and filled with fresh, healthy ingredients.

Juliana’s Kitchen: Authentic Peruvian Cuisine

When you arrive at Juliana's Kitchen you'll realize this Latin American restaurant feels more like a home than a commercial space, and as you step inside you'll see that there are only four or five tables. In other words, dining at Juliana's is an intimate, special experience that mimics being an honored guest in someone's home. Your food will likely be cooked by Juliana herself, and she may even come out of the kitchen to greet and chat with you. Her husband, Edwin, will be happy to explain any of the dishes you're unfamiliar with, and to make suggestions based on your tastes.

Yelp reviewers say the bistec apanado with rice and beans is tender and well seasoned, and seafood lovers recommend the spicy, citrusy ceviche mixto, which combines octopus, fish, mussels, and shrimp. Best of all, portions are generous and prices are reasonable.
