Love a Good Mystery? Check Out the Winchester Mystery House

After the Winchester Mystery House owner Sarah Winchester suffered death of both her husband and son, she sought solace in the words of a medium. The medium told her that she was being haunted by vengeful spirits who had attacked her family members, but if she built the spirits a grand house and never stopped adding embellishments, they would be satisfied. This is what promted her to build the Winchester Mystery House.
The Victorian home is open to the public, but you'll want to make sure that you pay attention to the tour guide so you don't get lost in its winding halls and twisting staircases. There's a switchback staircase with 44 steps and 7 flights that only actually rises 9 feet; miles worth of hallways and secret passages to match; and, of course, a Seance Room. The homestead also boasts acres and acres of gardens and orchards, so you can calm down after your fascinating tour.
