Conscious Cravings: Deliciously Mindful

By now many capable chefs have disproven the notion that vegetarian fare can't be utterly delicious. Austin's Conscious Cravings continues to impress diners with its delightful vegetarian food, charming many a carnivore at first bite. Conscious Cravings's Chimchurri Seitan Wrap explodes with the same flavorful intensity of a marinated flank steak sandwich. (Seitan is a wheat protein a little tougher than tofu). Its Bella – portabella mushroom topped with onions and olives and dressed in vegan mayo – imports Italian sensibilities sans the meatballs. And lest you think that eating such healthful, delicious food might set you back a pretty penny, be comforted that eating here won't break the bank. Conscious Cravings's wraps and salads cost just $5 apiece. Substitute quinoa-rice pilaf for wheat tortillas and a great meal's still just $6. It's good for your wallet, body, and soul!

At the Pecan Street Festival, local performers showcase their talents on one of three stages, while various local artists also display their crafts. This is one of the longest-running festivals in Austin, drawing a crowd of more than 300,000 people annually. The event kicks off on Saturday, September 29 at 11 am.

The Austin Symphonic Band will play an annual concert at Zilker Park on October 7, 2012 at 7 pm. This classical music concert is free, and guests are encouraged to bring a picnic basket and blanket and relax in the park while enjoying this live entertainment.

Things to Do in Austin

Looking to cool off? Don't miss Austin's Barton Springs Pool – a natural spring-fed watering hole that's three acres in size and a constant 68-degrees. If you prefer marked lanes, head to Deep Eddy. It's the oldest swimming pool in Texas with a shallow area perfect for the kids. During summer months, check out Splash Party Movie Nights – where family-friendly movies like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Disney's Tangled are screened.

Austin Zoo: Animal Sanctuary

Zoos are started for a variety of reasons—usually the animals come first, and a zoo is built to house them and educate the public about their lives. The Austin Zoo, however, was founded for a very different purpose. In 1990, a former goat ranch was purchased and renamed the Good Day Ranch, dedicated to taking in injured or abandoned animals in need of rehabilitation. Over the years, the ranch’s collection of animals has expanded exponentially. Starting out with mainly domestic animals, more and more exotic creatures were added until it was officially renamed the Austin Zoo in 1994. Now it is home to over 300 animals from 100 species, all rescued from or abandoned by their former owners. One of the biggest draws is the pair of Barbary lions, believed to be extinct in the wild, who are being used as a successful breeding family and have sired two cubs.
