See the Japanese Tea Garden in Full Bloom at Central Park

April 7, 2015 | sack

As the dreary winter months melt into spring, the Japanese Tea Garden at San Mateo's Central Park comes to life. Its cherry trees blossom in beautiful spurts of soft pink, creating an awe-inspiring sight for onlookers. The garden is striking any time of year, though. The brainchild of seasoned Tokyo architect Nagao Sakurai, the Tea Garden also plays host to a koi pond, bamboo grove, and granite pagoda—not to mention the focal point, a classic tea house.

Elsewhere in the park you'll find more traditional features, including a baseball field and lighted tennis courts. You can bring your kids along to run around on the playground or join one of the aerobics classes held here throughout the week. You can also take a ride on the mini train, which chugs around the park every weekend throughout the year, as well as weekdays from June to August.
