Japanese Tea Garden: Take a Trip Across the Pacific Without Leaving Town

December 1, 2015 | sack

On a sunny day, there's no better place to go in San Mateo than its perennially popular Japanese Tea Garden in Central Park. It sits not far from Hillsdale Square, but from the landscaping, you'd think you had traveled across the Pacific Ocean. That's thanks to architect Nagao Sakurai, a renowned Japanese artist.

His design includes classic Japanese elements, from the heavily visited koi pond to the granite pagoda. Stroll through the bamboo grove or explore the cherry tree grove when the branches are blossoming with pretty pink petals. You can also plan your visit around the koi feedings, which happen at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. every day of the week in the spring and summer months. If you want to host an event at the picturesque Japanese Tea Garden, plan a formal party at its tea house.
