Admire the Bamboo Forest and Koi Fish Pond at the San Mateo Japanese Gardens

Even in the heart of San Mateo, it’s possible to find respite from the noise and hubbub of the city. Just head over to Central Park’s Japanese Gardens, where you’ll find a quiet and serene place to spend your lunch break, take a morning walk, or relax over the weekend.

Designed by Nagao Sakurai, a renowned landscape architect hailing from Tokyo, the Japanese Gardens feature a bamboo forest, a pond stocked with koi fish, and several picturesque arched footbridges crisscrossing the water. If you want to watch the daily fish feeding, stop by at 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. during the warmer months. A tea house hosts traditional Japanese tea services, as well as the springtime Cherry Blossoms Festival.

The gardens are free and open to the public during daylight hours.
