When a bakery garners so much buzz that its number of Yelp reviews reaches 800-plus, everyone should take notice. And most people have taken notice of Heidi's Pies, an institution in San Mateo that has raked in nearly 850 online reviews since it opened. It's not far from Hillsdale Square and stays open 24 hours a day. Needless to say, there is something special about these pies—perhaps that they avoid preservatives and enlist only fresh fruit.

The apple sour cream pie remains one of the most popular now more than 40 years since Heidi's has opened, probably thanks to its balance of dense, sweet sour cream and tender apples. But you can also try a blueberry or cherry sour cream pie, or opt for a slice of another popular sweet: the banana whipped cream pie. In addition to the slate of pies on the menu, Heidi's offers full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, too, so you can sit down for a meal before dessert.
