Kangaroo Boxing Club: A Great Night Out

For after work, dinner or late night, come to the Kangaroo Boxing Club. Located at the corner of 11th Street and Park Road in Columbia Heights, the Kangaroo Boxing Club is named after a bar bet, so you know it’s going to be fun! The bar and dining area is a little small, but that just means that you’ll have to be close to everyone you know, and make some new friends. The bar features some nice beers on tap, a selection of wines and specialty drinks that will blow you away. You’ll definitely make this one of your happy hour stops! And the menu has classic American dishes, as well as some of the best barbeque in the DC area. Night owls will like the late night kitchen hours on Friday and Saturday. And the Sunday brunch is pretty good, too!

Shaw You Knew!

Anacostia isn’t the only area of DC with roots rich in black history. Duke Ellington was born and raised in Washington's Shaw neighborhood and played in his first band here. The music legend’s influence is still evident throughout the city, especially in the U Street Corridor—dubbed “Black Broadway”—where Ellington grew up and where jazz greats like Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey and Jelly Roll Morton once played. A clearly marked neighborhood heritage trail points out landmarks like the Lincoln Theatre, the newly restored historic Howard Theatre, the African American Civil War Memorial and the Thurgood Marshall Center for Justice and Heritage, home of the first African American YMCA. Nearby, Howard University is one of the nation’s top historically black colleges.
