February 12, 2016 11:07 am

It would seem like the kind of comment that a restaurateur, right on the verge of opening a new space, would make in jest. But if you visit the Columbia Room—open as of Tuesday—you'll see that it's not. This launch is a big deal, both for D.C.'s cocktail aficionados and for Brown. Shaw You Knew!

Ever wonder how the Shaw neighborhood got its name?
Shaw You Knew! 🙂

Shaw – An area of D.C. with a culturally rich history of African Americans, this neighborhood was a freed slaves camp on the outskirts of Washington. It got it's name during the Urban Renewal Era, when the neighborhood started to be referred to as Shaw due to the neighborhood's local Junior High School which was named after Civil War Colonel Robert Gould Shaw.
