Central Market: “An Amusement Park for Food Lovers”
Grocery shoppers in the Austin area know that there’s a superb spot to visit when you’re looking for the best bread, produce and other edible goods, and that’s Central Market. The popular chain actually started in Austin with a mandate to bring as much fresh food from all over Texas to local shoppers as possible, describing it as “an amusement park for food lovers,” and it’s grown significantly since the early days. Now customers rave about the excellent selection and fair prices. The produce section here is absolutely enormous, featuring both the staples and some more unusual products, all kept fresh. If you’re feeling peckish, stop in at the store’s café for some excellent pre-cooked food. The tamales in particular are quite popular, but everything here is great. Some complain that the aisles are too narrow, but with the sheer volume of stuff they pack into this store, it’s kind of a necessity.

Carmelo’s: From Sicily To Texas
This top-flight Italian eatery has been dazzling Austinites for years, and one bite of Chef Carmelo Mauro’s spectacular cuisine will make you a convert as well. Mauro opened the first Carmelo’s in Houston in 1978 and expanded to Austin in 1985. In the three decades he’s been in the restaurant business he has assembled a legion of devoted fans who claim that his place offers the best Italian in Texas, hands down. For appetizers, the beefsteak tomatoes topped with fresh mozzarella and fresh basil can’t be beat, as well as the mussels, flavorful and simmered in garlic white wine broth. Entrees that garner special attention are the chicken Parmesan, which is lush and delicious, as well as signature dishes like the tender Ossobucco and fettucine carbonara, which is cooked tableside. In general, the seafood here is beyond reproach, with tender, perfectly-cooked salmon a highlight. Carmelo’s also has an excellent wine selection. For dessert, the lemon cake, served from an old-school three-tiered dessert cart, is some of the best in town.

Gourmands: Sandwiches with Personality
Do you want a sandwich? Then there’s one place in Austin that you need to try: Gourmands, opened in 2011, has earned a reputation for seriously great food at fair prices. Located in an old bar that’s been thoroughly remodeled, the atmosphere is quirky and overflowing with character, from the checkerboard tile on the walls to the slight lean to the building. That character comes through in the food as well. These aren’t your ordinary deli sandwiches – each of them has real personality. The menu is extensive, and just about everything is great, but some favorites include the Second Deadly Sin (smoked turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, sprouts and fried avocado) and the Cool Hand Luke (house-made egg salad, celery and caramelized onions). One of the best things about Gourmands is the house-made potato chips that come with every sandwich. Fresh from the fryer, they’re perfectly crispy and salty and will leave you craving more.

Austin Playhouse: Local Theater
When it was conceived in 2000, Austin Playhouse became a point of convergence for much of the talent-replete city’s theatrical brainpower. Austin Playhouse brought together a wide array of producers, artists, and directors to work with local legend Don Toner, a luminary of Austin’s theater scene. Since then, Austin Playhouse has became one of the premier venues for local theater while still staying small. You won’t see massive reproductions of Don Giovanni here, but you’ll be able to catch shows like Boeing, Boeing (about a man’s attempt to juggle his love for three flight attendants) and an adaptation of A Room With a View. Tickets typically run around $24 for a show, but the playhouse offers deals for students, seniors, and members of the military. Check Austin Playhouse’s website for the current season’s schedule of shows.
