Satisfying Sips: Homemade Sangria

December 11, 2012 12:04 pm

If you're looking for a fun beverage for your next dinner party or celebration, there's no better sip than a glass of chilled Sangria. This easy-to-make recipe makes one large pitcher of tasty, refreshing Sangria, certain to please everyone's palate.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja reds, Zinfandel, Shiraz all work well)
1 lemon cut into wedges
1 orange cut into wedges
1 peach cut into wedges
2 tbsp sugar
1 shot brandy
2 cups ginger ale or club soda

Preparation:

Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon and orange into the wine. Add in all the citrus and peach wedges (leaving out seeds if possible), and mix in the sugar and brandy. If possible, chill overnight to allow the flavors to meld.

Add in the ginger ale or club soda just before serving to add some extra fizz. (If you'd like to serve right away, use chilled red wine and serve over lots of ice.)

Cheers!

Central Market: “An Amusement Park for Food Lovers”

December 4, 2012 12:02 pm

Grocery shoppers in the Austin area know that there’s a superb spot to visit when you’re looking for the best bread, produce and other edible goods, and that’s Central Market. The popular chain actually started in Austin with a mandate to bring as much fresh food from all over Texas to local shoppers as possible, describing it as “an amusement park for food lovers,” and it’s grown significantly since the early days. Now customers rave about the excellent selection and fair prices. The produce section here is absolutely enormous, featuring both the staples and some more unusual products, all kept fresh. If you’re feeling peckish, stop in at the store’s café for some excellent pre-cooked food. The tamales in particular are quite popular, but everything here is great. Some complain that the aisles are too narrow, but with the sheer volume of stuff they pack into this store, it’s kind of a necessity.
