Every spring, Jim Jim's Water Ice opens its order windows to start serving up the sweet, fruity summer treats that have made it locally famous. The water ice here is crafted with real fruit, and perhaps that's why there are three other locations in addition to the outpost on 6th Street, not far from Lamar Union.

This is the original store, which opened in 1994, and it offers more than 30 freshly crafted flavors of water ice every single day. Some of the summery options you may see on the menu include sour watermelon, strawberry-kiwi, sugar-free strawberry, and even birthday cake, chocolate, and coconut. So no matter what type of sweet flavors you prefer, you'll be able to find them at Jim Jim's Water Ice.

Enjoy Artisanal Dishes Crafted from Locally Sourced Ingredients at Odd Duck

Classic American food gets a modern makeover at Odd Duck, a popular spot for food and drinks in Austin. Located just around the corner from Lamar Union, the restaurant is a popular spot for foodies near and far. The restaurant started out as a trailer serving food from local farms to the people of Austin and has since blossomed into a brick-and-mortar restaurant serving the same delicious, local food for brunch, lunch, and dinner. The chefs get all their ingredients from local farms—everything from eggs and produce to meat and dairy products.

The menu changes with the farm’s demands, but restaurant guests can look forward to carefully curated menu items like grilled redfish, fried chicken, duck breast, and more. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema: Don’t Miss This Summer’s “Jaws on the Water” Event

Going to the movies is a time-honored tradition, and it’s always nice to make the experience a bit more special. If you live in the Austin area, check out Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to do just that. The movie theater is located just around the corner from Lamar Union Apartments and has options for dining and drinking while enjoying your movie. A full menu is available both at your seat in front of the big screen as well as at The Highball Restaurant right next door.

Throughout the course of June and July, Alamo Drafthouse presents its “Jaws on the Water” event. Guests can watch the 1975 thriller on a big outdoor screen while floating on an inner tube in an open body of water. Attendees can take part in the pre-movie beach party and enjoy food and drinks while they watch the film. If you’re opting for more of a classic theater experience, you can reserve tickets and seats for the theater on the Alamo Drafthouse's website.

The Austin Toy Museum Is an Interactive Showcase of Toys from the Past 100 Years

A few months ago, the Austin Toy Museum opened in East Austin, showcasing collector’s items and vintage toys. Most of the items on view at the museum are from the 1980s, but a number of the featured toys date all the way back to the early 1900s. The museum prides itself on being a very interactive and hands-on museum—the space even has arcade games that visitors can play. Stop by to play vintage Ms. Pac-man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, and more.

Admission to the museum is extremely affordable; tickets purchased online are only $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and military, and $3 for children. Anyone who is looking to get rid of old toys can make a donation to the Austin Toy Museum—the museum is always looking for donations to help make it one of the biggest toy museums in the country. The museum is an easy spot to visit for residents of Lamar Union since it’s just over two miles away.

Check Out a Concert This Fall at the Austin City Limits Music Festival

If you’re looking for cool experiences to fill the coming months, check out the Austin City Limits Music Festival. The festival is held each year in Zilker Metropolitan Park, just a short five-minute trip from Lamar Union, taking place over the course of two weekends. The 2016 festival will take place September 30 through October 2 and October 7 to October 9.

The Austin City Limits Music Festival has brought live music and entertainment to the residents of Austin for 15 years. This year’s lineup includes dozens of musical acts, including major headliners like Radiohead, Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar, and LCD Soundsystem. Guest can buy tickets to the festival for a combination of days. General admission tickets will get you access to 130 performances, food from local vendors, lockers to store belongings, and a commemorative wristband. A 3-day weekend general admission ticket costs $255. One-day tickets will also be available as the event date approaches.
