Jim Jim’s Water Ice: Real Fruit in Every Frosty Treat

Every spring, Jim Jim's Water Ice opens its order windows to start serving up the sweet, fruity summer treats that have made it locally famous. The water ice here is crafted with real fruit, and perhaps that's why there are three other locations in addition to the outpost on 6th Street, not far from Lamar Union.

This is the original store, which opened in 1994, and it offers more than 30 freshly crafted flavors of water ice every single day. Some of the summery options you may see on the menu include sour watermelon, strawberry-kiwi, sugar-free strawberry, and even birthday cake, chocolate, and coconut. So no matter what type of sweet flavors you prefer, you'll be able to find them at Jim Jim's Water Ice.

Enjoy Artisanal Dishes Crafted from Locally Sourced Ingredients at Odd Duck

Classic American food gets a modern makeover at Odd Duck, a popular spot for food and drinks in Austin. Located just around the corner from Lamar Union, the restaurant is a popular spot for foodies near and far. The restaurant started out as a trailer serving food from local farms to the people of Austin and has since blossomed into a brick-and-mortar restaurant serving the same delicious, local food for brunch, lunch, and dinner. The chefs get all their ingredients from local farms—everything from eggs and produce to meat and dairy products.

The menu changes with the farm’s demands, but restaurant guests can look forward to carefully curated menu items like grilled redfish, fried chicken, duck breast, and more. Choose from an assortment of delicious—and largely local—cocktails, beer, and wine to pair with your food. The restaurant is open daily, so check out Odd Duck this week!

Kalologie 360 Spa: Powerful Beauty Products Sans the Harmful Additives

There's a reason that you can buy Kalologie products online. Their popularity extends far beyond the clientele who actually visit a Kalologie location, like the Kalologie 360 Spa in Austin. That's because these powerful beauty products enlist the help of medical-grade ingredients to care for your skin, but they leave out the harsh chemicals and irritants that you might find in lower end products.

Head to the Austin Kalologie 360 if you want to experience the benefits of these products for yourself. You can start with the Signature Kalologie Facial, which is distinguished by its exfoliating pomegranate enzyme mask. The mask helps to get rid of dead skin and, as a result, ease fine lines. If you're suffering from acne or other blemishes, opt for the Clarifying Facial instead. It helps heal your skin by pulling bacteria and grime from pores, leaving them free to breathe. Kalologie 360 also offers a variety of massages, from Swedish to deep tissue, so you should be able to find a suitable source of doting at the spa.

The Austin Toy Museum Is an Interactive Showcase of Toys from the Past 100 Years

A few months ago, the Austin Toy Museum opened in East Austin, showcasing collector’s items and vintage toys. Most of the items on view at the museum are from the 1980s, but a number of the featured toys date all the way back to the early 1900s. The museum prides itself on being a very interactive and hands-on museum—the space even has arcade games that visitors can play. Stop by to play vintage Ms. Pac-man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, and more.

Admission to the museum is extremely affordable; tickets purchased online are only $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and military, and $3 for children. Anyone who is looking to get rid of old toys can make a donation to the Austin Toy Museum—the museum is always looking for donations to help make it one of the biggest toy museums in the country. The museum is an easy spot to visit for residents of Lamar Union since it’s just over two miles away.

Resolute Fitness: Where Spin Class and Yoga Collide

If you've ever taken a spin class, you know that the grueling cardio can leave your body feeling tense and overworked—that is, unless you stretch properly afterward. That's why Resolute Fitness incorporates yoga into its Combo classes, making stretching more than just an afterthought.

These classes begin with a precise 28 minutes of spinning, incorporating sprints, uphill climbs, and everything in between. After the intense interval training, you move from the spin studio into the yoga studio, where you not only stretch out the stress of cycling, but also build more strength while you flow through yoga poses. Of course, if you're not much of a yogi—or maybe you aren't much of a cyclist—you can opt for a class that covers just one form of exercise. Resolute Fitness also offers straight Power Flow yoga classes and 45-minute cycling sessions. Sprinkled throughout the week, you'll also find special classes such as yoga with weights or Cycle CORE.

Lick Honest Ice Creams: Try the Goat Cheese, Thyme, and Honey Ice Cream

Goat cheese. Thyme. Olive oil. These might not be the ingredients you'd expect to find in your ice cream, but that's what makes Lick Honest Ice Creams such a treat. The Lick ice cream shop in Austin is one of two locations serving up scoops of ice cream crafted using dairy from a family-owned Texas farm. The staff mixes batches of ice cream in house and serves the sweets in compostable cups with equally eco-friendly spoons and napkins.

So you can feel good about sinking a spoon into some goat cheese, thyme, and honey ice cream. Fresh thyme from a local grower mingles with Austin-born Pure Luck goat cheese and local Good Flow honey in this offbeat, decadent treat. The dark chocolate ice cream infused with Texas Olive Ranch Olive Oil and a dash of sea salt is another popular scoop at Lick Honest Ice Creams, but don't forget about other quirky options like roasted beets and fresh mint ice cream or Coffee with Cream, featuring Texas's Third Coast Coffee. There are also rosters of special seasonal flavors and vegan, dairy-free confections available here.
