Tibetan Momo: A Fresh (But Traditional) Take on Dumplings

If you actually ordered momos in Tibet, they'd probably be packed with yak meat. But the chefs who recreate this traditional dish in Austin cater to American eaters with some more familiar fillings, namely ground beef and veggies. Even so, the Tibetan-style dumplings are a departure from the fare you'll find elsewhere in Austin, even at its many eclectic food trucks and trailers.

Since it opened over the summer, Tibetan Momo has set up shop just about a mile from Lamar Union. So if you're still wondering exactly what a "momo" is, you can easily taste a few for yourself. They come steamed or pan-fried, filled with veggies or beef, and they're not the only thing on the menu. Tibetan Momo also doles out dishes like beef chow mein, tingmo (steamed buns), and fried rice.

Have you tried these momos yet?

Barley Swine: A Hotspot For Local, Seasonal Fare in Austin

Before Bryce Gilmore debuted Barley Swine in 2010, he was already making waves in Austin's culinary scene with his legendary food truck, Odd Duck. Many current patrons of Barley Swine still fondly recall the food truck with its ever-present line—a testament to high caliber of Gilmore's grub. And if that fare was worth standing in line for, then Barley Swine's locally sourced cuisine warrants an overnight camp out. Thanks to the brick-and-mortar location, though, you won't have to go to such extremes.

You can just take a short stroll down the street from Lamar Union, step inside, and grab a table. Eater Austin recommends you do so this month, crowning Barley Swine one of its 38 Essential Austin Restaurants for October 2015. Don't worry about picking a dish. The kitchen team only offers a seasonally inspired, locally sourced prix fixe menu each evening. Expect to spend up to two hours tasting everything on it.

Shake Shack Makes its Debut in Austin!

Shake Shack started off as a small cart that served burgers and shakes in New York City, but it's expanded far beyond The Big Apple. People on the East Coast can’t get enough of these eclectic burgers and shakes, and now Austin residents can fall under the spell of Shake Shack's tasty treats.

Austin was lucky enough to be the recipient of Texas’ first Shake Shack, and Lamar Union residents will be happy to know that its newest location is right in the same building. Be sure to true their Lockhart Link burger, it’s exclusive to the Austin location! Fans of Shake Shack also recommend the crinkle fries (the crinkle cheese fries are particularly delicious!) It's possible you might not have room for a shake once you've had a burger and fries, but eaters recommend getting one to go to enjoy later.

Gravy: Biscuits and Gravy near Lamar Union in Austin

Gravy's an Austin food truck with a pretty specific focus: biscuits and gravy. The Southern food treat is tough to do well, but Gravy regulars suggest that the truck offers some of the best biscuits and gravy you'll find in Austin.

This is rich, hearty food, and menu items with names like "Get Your Lard On" offer a hint of what you'll find to eat here. That dish, for instance, features biscuits and gravy complemented by pulled pork, bacon crumbles, and fried egg. "The Deep South" dish is a biscuit topped with half a pound of pork sausage gravy. A kids menu offers smaller but similarly hearty portions, and Gravy's menu also has French toast stuffed with cream cheese and a large breakfast taco with your choice of meat.

Gravy's part of a food truck park, so if you visit you'll find some areas for sitting outdoors and enjoying the Austin weather. If you'd like to check it out, Gravy's open Tuesday through Fridays from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Visit the Gravy website to find out more!

Austins’s Fat Cactus Reinvents the Taco with Fry Bread near Lamar Union

Whereas many Mexican restaurants opt for traditional tortillas for their tacos, Fat Cactus food trailer does something unusual. Instead of wrapping taco fixings in a flour tortilla, its chefs stuff the ingredients inside of fluffy fry bread. The result is a slightly puffier version of the classic taco. Since the place isn't too far from Lamar Union, it's easy to try this innovative take on a classic dish for yourself.

One Yelper describes the fry bread as "absolutely incredible," and her opinion is supported by the many other glowing reviews of both the bread and the restaurant in general. The trailer offers only a handful of options, but those are more than enough for most patrons. Indulge in the Taj taco, overflowing with ground beef, red onion, spring mix, cilantro, fried chickpeas, and a curry yogurt sauce. You can also try the "Hippy," which forgoes meat for veggies such as zucchini, squash, and chayote, all mixed with pinto beans, cheddar cheese, and "secret" spices.

Micklethwait Craft Meats: A Unique Austin Eatery not far from Lamar Union

More than 200 Yelp reviewers sing the praises of Micklethwait Craft Meats, a casual eatery in Austin that specializes in classic Southern barbecue. Its simple menu belies the huge, smoky platters of food that wow patrons at Micklethwait Craft Meats. They all come from the smoker out back, which patrons are welcome to ogle (many even snap pictures).

One customer photo depicts the massive beef rib, a locally acclaimed favorite that comes with tender slices of house-crafted Andouille sausage, onions and peppers, and a signature sauce for dunking. The house-made sausage is another favorite, though a few links aren't nearly as filling as the Fred Flinstone rib. The aptly named slab of meat tips the scales at 1.5 pounds—and you can tell from just a glance. Enjoy your meal with a cold bottled Coke and save some room for pecan pie or a moon pie.

If you'd like to try this Austin eatery for yourself, Micklethwait Craft Meats is just a short trip from Lamar Union.
