Sustainable Food Center Farmers’ Markets Run Four Convenient Local Markets Near You

August 1, 2016 3:01 pm

You can shop fruit, veggies, meat, cheese, flowers, and more from Central Texas farmers and food producers at the Sustainable Food Center’s (SFC) farmers' markets. SFC runs four of the area’s most popular markets: SFC Farmers' Market Downtown, SFC Farmers' Market at Sunset Valley, SFC Community Farm Stand East, and SFC Farmers' Market at the Triangle. Each of the four markets occur on different days of the week. More information on specific dates times and locations is available online, so be sure to check out the website.

Each week, the markets welcome local vendors selling a variety of goods, including honey, meat, produce, fish, cheese, and ready-to-eat food. A number of the markets even offer activities and crafts. Live music often can be heard at the markets too. None of the farmers’ markets are far from Lamar Union, and their different schedules make it easy to shop local this summer.

Broken Spoke: One of Texas’s Last Dance Halls

July 22, 2016 3:04 pm

Billed as the "last of the true Texas dance halls," the Broken Spoke is almost always hosting dance lessons, a live band, or both. Located on South Lamar in Austin, this old school dance hall offers two-step and swing dancing lessons Wednesday through Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Just show up a little ahead of class to sign up.

If you're already a solid dancer, just stop by any time the dance hall is open to show off your stuff. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. There's a live band every night from 6 to 8 p.m., so you shouldn't have any trouble picking up a beat. Of course, you can also skip the dancing and sit down for a meal. Broken Spoke's menu incorporates a full list of Texan fare and Mexican cuisine, ranging from the "famous" chicken-fried steak to quesadillas and fajitas.

July 15, 2016 4:24 pm

Every spring, Jim Jim's Water Ice opens its order windows to start serving up the sweet, fruity summer treats that have made it locally famous. The water ice here is crafted with real fruit, and perhaps that's why there are three other locations in addition to the outpost on 6th Street, not far from Lamar Union.

This is the original store, which opened in 1994, and it offers more than 30 freshly crafted flavors of water ice every single day. Some of the summery options you may see on the menu include sour watermelon, strawberry-kiwi, sugar-free strawberry, and even birthday cake, chocolate, and coconut. So no matter what type of sweet flavors you prefer, you'll be able to find them at Jim Jim's Water Ice.
