Café L’Aube: Crepes And More

This lovely Fairmount restaurant has become a local favorite for a number of reasons. When owners Jean-Luc and Rachel emigrated to the United States, they began to miss the simple, flavorful street food of Europe. In 2008, they decided to do something about it and opened the doors at Café L’Aube. The restaurant quickly built up an impressive collection of regulars who rave about the high-quality coffee and delicious crepes. If you’re hungry, the Complete is one of the best savory meals in town – filled with bacon, eggs, and Emmenthaler Swiss cheese, it’s great for breakfast or lunch. The Normandy, stuffed with turkey, Camembert fondue, and caramelized apple, is also a must-try. Diners with a sweet tooth rave about the fresh-baked muffins. There is plenty of comfortable seating and free Wi-Fi internet if you want to make a day of it, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable.

Elfreth’s Alley: A Hidden Treasure

Philadelphia is rife with history, being one of the oldest cities in the United States. If you really want to take a trip back into the past, make a detour through Elfreth’s Alley. This is one of the oldest continually inhabited residential streets in the country, dating back to the early 1700s. Named after blacksmith Jeremiah Elfreth, the roadway is lined with Georgian-style townhomes that have weathered the test of time. In the 1930s, a preservation association was formed to ensure that the alley would remain intact for future generations to visit. The most interesting thing about Elfreth’s Alley is that it’s still a residential neighborhood – even though the buildings are centuries old, they’re all still inhabited. You can take a phone tour of the street to get some more information on its rich and fascinating history. Volunteer guides also staff the gift shop, which is interesting on its own accord.

The Capital Grille: Sensational Steaks in Philadelphia

Located on Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts, the Capital Grille is an old-fashioned steakhouse with respect for tradition. The steakhouse experience is a quintessentially American one – big slabs of beef, carefully-selected sides, and an atmosphere of power and respect are all mandatory. The Capital Grille delivers on all three ably. This is a high-end restaurant that is perfect for a splurge, so come prepared to shell out serious coin in exchange for amazing food. Service is absolute perfection, with knowledgeable, attentive waiters at your beck and call. Start the meal with a cocktail from the fantastic bar and then peruse the menu. Obviously the big draw here is the steaks – dry-aged and cooked to order, they’re among the best steaks in Philadelphia. But there’s plenty of other good stuff on the menu as well. The Kobe beef carpaccio is incredible, as is the lobster bisque. Fans of surf & turf will find a lot to love here as well. If you still have room for dessert, don’t miss the flourless chocolate espresso cake.
