Dolce Neve: Classic Gelato with Local Flavor

When you think of Austin’s food scene you likely think of barbecue before gelato, but South Austin’s Dolce Neve is aiming to change that. This gelato shop uses a variety of creative, local ingredients to create some of the best gelato that you’ll have in the Lone Star State, and the regulars report that customer service is exceptional.

Each gelato flavor is made from scratch on site every morning, and it is made 100 percent according to old-school Italian recipes. Gelato flavors include 18 handcrafted options that change daily, but some of the most popular include goat cheese and blueberry lime jam, ricotta pistachio, and dark chocolate with cayenne pepper. If that’s not enough to get your sweet tooth tingling, Dolce Neve also offers other frozen novelties such as granita, popsicles, gelato sandwiches, and affogatos.

Dolce Neve is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays. Note that the cafe is closed Mondays.

Apply These Easy Decorating Tips to Your Child’s Bedroom

It’s important for your little one's bedroom to be a reflection of his personality, but you want the room to look nice, too! If you’re searching for some fun, affordable ways to decorate your child's room, these creative tips can help.

  1. Add a gallery wall. If your son or daughter is a budding artist, encourage him or her to paint a few pictures on a variety of different paper sizes. Frame the artwork in colorful frames and hang them in a group to create an eclectic gallery wall that your child will be proud of.
  2. Restore hand-me-down furniture. It seems silly to invest in expensive furniture that the kids will outgrow in a few years, so give that old dresser a fun facelift instead. Sand down the existing paint or stain and paint it your child’s favorite color.
  3. Add removable wall decals. Most home goods stores today sell wall decals in a variety of different styles, so let your child pick the one he or she likes best. They’re a fast way to add personality to the room, and they dress up the wall without painting.
  4. Mix patterns. From throw pillows to rugs, mixing patterns based on the same color scheme creates a funky look while still coordinating perfectly.
  5. Invest in simple storage. Things like low dressers and cubed shelves with removable bins keep the room organized, and they’re simple enough to encourage the kids to put away their own toys.

Feeling Jittery? Avoid These Surprising Caffeine Sources!

You’ve already cut out your morning latte and ruled out the sugary energy drinks in an effort to reduce your caffeine intake, but you still occasionally feel jittery or prone to headaches. If you’re making all of the right steps toward a caffeine-free diet but just can’t seem to catch a break, these surprising products may be to blame.

  1. Dietary supplements. Frustratingly enough, one of your other attempts to lose weight and stay healthy may actually be the cause of your caffeine headaches. Dietary supplements, including multivitamins, often contain high doses of caffeine that aren’t always listed on the nutrition label. Some supplements even contain over 210 milligrams – that’s more than double the amount in one cup of coffee!
  2. Chocolate. Chocolate, another popular vice among many adults, is known to contain just as much caffeine as coffee in some cases. If you need a chocolate fix, indulge in less intense milk chocolate instead of dark.
  3. Tea. Switching your daily cup of Joe for a cup of tea still causes you to consume caffeine, contrary to what many may think. One cup of black tea has around 14 to 60 milligrams, while green tea contains 24 to 40 milligrams of caffeine.

Seeking Original Artwork? Here’s Where to Shop It Online!

Furnishing your home with original artwork is a very fulfilling hobby, but unfortunately it can also be very expensive. There are quite a few websites that offer artwork created by independent artists for much less than gallery prices, which makes them beneficial to both you and the artist. Here are a few of the best.

Etsy
Etsy has become the internet’s go-to spot for handmade art and home goods, and for very good reason. This online marketplace enables independent artists to create an online shop and sell their goods, whether those goods are paintings, sculptures, or even wall hangings made out of old license plates. Best of all, you can search Etsy by keywords to find exactly what you have in mind for any room in your home.

Fine Art America
If you’re looking for more traditional paintings or photography for your home, Fine Art America is a great resource. This site features artwork from artists and photographers from around the world, at all price points.

Zatista
While many online art stores sell reproductions of famous works, Zatista offers only unique, original works that none of your neighbors will have. If you live in a small town or city that isn’t teeming with art galleries, this is the ideal way to browse thousands of pieces from artists who could be the next big thing.

Dip a Chip Into These Scrumptious Summer Salsas

Chips and salsa are staple dishes at many social gatherings, and you’ll often find your guests crowded around the salsa bowl with an overflowing tortilla chip in hand. If you want to give your friends and family a different salsa to try at your next dinner party, opting for a sweeter recipe is a great choice. Here are three fruity salsa recipes that your guests will simply adore.

Annie’s Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips
Not only does this recipe add a wide assortment of fruits to your usual salsa, it also includes cinnamon flavored chips to go along with them. This dish is much sweeter than it is spicy, and it even makes a creative dessert for an outdoor dinner party!

Mojito Melon Salsa
If you like mojito cocktails, you’ll love the sweet, minty flavor when it’s used in a fresh and fruity salsa. This recipe for Mojito Melon Salsa uses a juicy combination of watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew tossed with some onion and spices, while a generous helping of mint leaves gives it that signature mojito taste.

Watermelon Fire and Ice Salsa
Give the usual tomatoes a rest and try this fruity salsa that uses watermelon as its base. The rest of the recipe is the same as traditional salsa, which gives it a wonderfully complex combination of spicy and sweet.

Explore the Flavors of Mexican Cuisine at El Alma

Obviously there is no shortage of Mexican food in Austin, but locals will unanimously say that one of the can’t-miss eateries here is El Alma. This upscale Mexican restaurant is named after chef Alma Alcocer, who was born in Mexico City and attended the legendary Le Cordon Bleu academy in Paris for culinary training. After her studies, she moved to Austin where she paired with restaurant magnate Carlos Rivero to open El Alma in 2012. The restaurant’s location is unique and charming; it’s built into a limestone hillside with an awesome outdoor patio.

Of course, the food is the biggest reason to take a trip here. Some of the menu’s most-loved dishes include the incredible duck emmoladas—mole-covered enchiladas stuffed with healthy portions of some of the most tender, flavorful duck you’ll ever eat—as well as the shrimp chelada, a dish of seafood cooked in citrus, ceviche-style, and topped with beer.

3 Brunch Cocktails to Greet a Lazy Sunday

From savory omelets stuffed with melted cheese to maple syrup-drizzled French toast, weekend brunch is arguably the best meal of the whole week, made even better by a sip of a bloody Mary or a bellini. Whether you're serving brunch to two people or twenty, these three brunchtime cocktail recipes will get your Sunday off to a great start.

Champagne Punch [Martha Stewart]
Not only does Martha's take on champagne punch taste great, it looks pretty in the pitcher. Her recipe combines fresh blueberries, raspberries, sliced peaches, ice, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a pitcher, then champagne is poured over top.

New-Look Bloody Mary [Bon Appetit]
This bloody Mary receives a spicy kick from the unique combo of sriracha sauce, horseradish, black pepper, and curry powder. Dill pickle and lemon juice brighten the mix, while celery stalks and lemon wedges provide the finishing touch.

Pamplemousse [Food & Wine]
Kick off your Sunday with this refreshing cocktail, which is relatively low in alcohol. The juices of grapefruit and lemon are shaken with gin and elderflower liqueur, then garnished with a basil leaf.
