Harry Ransom Center: Literary Treasures

Expand your cultural horizons with a visit to the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin. Since its creation in 1957 by former university provost Harry Huntt Ransom, the center has been a repository of some of the rarest and most valuable manuscripts and photographs from around the globe. The collection includes original page proofs of James Joyce's Ulysses. The literary archives also contain manuscripts of Russell Banks, Jorge Luis Borges, John Fowles, Adrienne Kennedy, Doris Lessing, Penelope Lively, David Mamet, Isaac Bashevis Singer and Leon Uris. In addition to preserving and safeguarding these important collections, the center supports a wide variety of programs for scholars, students and the public at large. Tours are offered at 12 p.m. on Tuesdays and 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Break Point at the Boardwalk: A South Austin Food Truck Park

Love food trucks? Austin's newest food truck park has just arrived! Break Point at the Boardwalk offers a scenic view across Lady Bird Lake toward Downtown Austin along with some really great food!

Now open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. til 1 p.m. for lunch, and from 5:30 p.m. til 8 p.m. for dinner, Break Point hosts great Austin food trucks like Oyama, Jambulence ER, Wright Bros Dairy, Garbo's (they've got lobster rolls!), Rosie's Sno-Cup Fortunes, and more! Brightly colored picnic tables make it a snap to find somewhere to sit, and big umbrellas offer welcome shade. With so much to offer, this place seems destined to become a popular spot for Austin foodies.

The Continental Club: Hit The Stage

Austin is well-known as one of the best live music spots in the United States, and there’s always something going on there. One of the top places to catch bands in town is The Continental Club. Opened in 1957, the Club was originally a private supper club that hosted big bandleaders like Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey, but when the Texas rock boom started in the late 1960s, the Continental became a destination for rock fans. The club’s golden age saw legends like Joe Ely and Stevie Ray Vaughn take the same stage as young turks like the Butthole Surfers. In the 80s, the entire club was remodeled to give it a 50s throwback vibe, but the spirit of the place hasn’t changed a bit. On any given night, a band will take the stage, the dance floor will be packed and you’re sure to make a new friend or two.

Water 2 Wine: Make Your Own Wine

Have you ever wanted to try to make wine yourself? No, not like that old I Love Lucy episode where Lucy and Ethel stamp the grapes. Austin’s Water 2 Wine is a full-service custom winery that lets budding vintners blend their own wine, let it age and take it home when it’s done. The process is simple: each sessions starts with a tasting, where the staff lets you sample different wines and tells you about the grapes that produced it. Then you select a juice or blend to create your very own wine with, as well as “pitching” the yeast to start the fermentation process. It takes about 45 days for your wine to be drinkable, at which point they’ll bottle it and label it for you. If you don’t want to do it yourself, Water 2 Wine also offers an excellent selection of vintages from around the world.

Central Market: “An Amusement Park for Food Lovers”

Grocery shoppers in the Austin area know that there’s a superb spot to visit when you’re looking for the best bread, produce and other edible goods, and that’s Central Market. The popular chain actually started in Austin with a mandate to bring as much fresh food from all over Texas to local shoppers as possible, describing it as “an amusement park for food lovers,” and it’s grown significantly since the early days. Now customers rave about the excellent selection and fair prices. The produce section here is absolutely enormous, featuring both the staples and some more unusual products, all kept fresh. If you’re feeling peckish, stop in at the store’s café for some excellent pre-cooked food. The tamales in particular are quite popular, but everything here is great. Some complain that the aisles are too narrow, but with the sheer volume of stuff they pack into this store, it’s kind of a necessity.
