Fresh French Cuisine at Lenoir

South Austin's Lenoir serves fresh French cuisine with an eye on the community.

The restaurant offers a “CSR” (community supported restaurant) membership to encourage community building through ethical and delicious food. Their sense of community is reflected in the intimate dining room that features a 10-person community table. This is farm-to-table, ethically sourced cuisine, fresh, vibrant and seasonal. The menu changes weekly; be prepared to taste uncommon meats like rabbit and antelope. The prixe-fixe option allows you to order any three courses; choose from field, land, sea, and sweets.  The portions are small, so you can enjoy a variety of tastes without feeling stuffed. Reservations are recommended — if you arrive early, wait outside in the beautiful courtyard.

Burgers and Beer at Hopdoddy Burger Bar

After less than three years in business, Hopdoddy Burger Bar is already an Austin institution. Their simple menu features burgers, salads, beer, and other adult beverages. Burgers are reasonably priced and made from top quality ingredients. Hormone and antibiotic-free black angus beef is ground in house and grilled to perfection. Buns are baked from scratch twice daily, and they even cut their own fries.

In addition to several beef burgers on the menu, Hopdoddy offers turkey, lamb, tuna and veggie burgers. Be sure to top your patty with their homemade chipotle ketchup. Staff will guide you through their ordering process, which starts with bar items first — including many craft and local beer options in addition to mixed drinks — before placing your food order. This place is busy, so be prepared for a line out the door. Excited customers and tight seating make for a boisterous atmosphere, so it’s best suited to a night out with friends.

“Chillax” at Shady Grove

Nestled in a grove of pecan trees, Shady Grove has offered American comfort food favorites since 1992. Regulars love their beefy chili — anything on the menu that features this signature creation is a guaranteed hit. The chili cheese fries, Frito pie and chicken fried steak topped with green chili sauce are also perennial favorites. If you want lighter fare, there are several salads as well as the popular vegetarian “hippie” sandwich which layers grilled veggies, mozzarella, and pesto onto homemade bread. Old-fashioned stone work complete with a fireplace makes Shady Grove a great place to stay a while and savor your food. Their outdoor patio is spacious and every Thursday they host “Unplugged at the Grove” which features Austin’s musical talent.  Don't miss the mixed drinks, either …

Banger’s: A Classic Beer Garden and More

Central Texas has a powerful German influence, as waves of immigrants from Europe were among the first to settle the area. If you want to sample the experience of a classic Tyrolean beergarden, grab some friends and head to Banger’s. Proudly advertising the largest sausage selection in Austin as well as over 100 beers on tap, this temple of comfort food is a one-way ticket to good times. The sausages come in a huge range of flavors, from traditional brats to more adventurous currywurst and seriously out of the box options like duck, bacon & fig. They’re all prepared to perfection, served in fresh-baked pretzel buns and ready for a beer to wash them down. The libation selection is unbelievable, and the staff is great at recommending new beers to try based on your personal tastes. Sure, this may or may not be the best spot for a first date, but for a casual night out with the guys Banger’s can’t be beat.
