The Hen House: A Houston-Area Destination For Fiber Arts Supplies

This 6,000 square feet retail store is packed floor to ceiling with quilting and fiber arts supplies. Those that enjoy knitting and crocheting will be amazed at the yarn selection with everything from simple skeins to luxurious wools. Quilters will love the sewing supplies and colorful selection of fabrics. The Hen House regularly offers classes for beginners and experienced crafters. For those that aren’t crafty themselves, but appreciate artisan goods, they sell handmade gifts like candles, cards, jewelry and knitted items.

Merlot 2 Masterpiece: BYOB Painting Party

If you’re bored with the usual night out, plan an evening with Merlot 2 Masterpiece in Spring. These BYOB guided painting classes are a fun way to get in touch with your creativity in a relaxed party atmosphere. For about $50 you will get all the supplies and instruction necessary to create your own artwork, and past participants have found the instructors to be encouraging and helpful. Everyone works on the same painting for each party, and there is a wide range in their course offerings from portraits to landscapes and whimsical or abstract. At the end of the three hour event you’ll have your very own masterpiece to hang in your home or give as a gift. It’s a great idea for birthday parties and other special occasions. Favorites include Asian Antiques by Eastwind and Harpers Fabulous Finds There are plenty of eateries for snacking and drinking. Stop by the Little Dutch Girl, a specialty import shop featuring treats from Holland, for a sweet snack of homemade fudge Wimberly Valley Winery offers reasonably priced bottles at their Old Town tasting room, and the Loose Caboose served frozen margaritas and BBQ from its rail car restaurant. Keep your eye out for festivals: Old Town Spring regularly hosts events that celebrate wine, crawfish, and art.

An old tobacco barn has been re-purposed to become the Dosey Doe, a great place for food, music, and fun near Marquis at the Woodlands. When you come in, you’ll immediately be taken away by the large space. The Big Barn has great acoustics – perfect for listening to music! But first, have a seat and a meal. The chef at the Dosey Doe believes in cooking everything from scratch, using only the freshest local ingredients. Check out the Blue Plate Specials like grilled rib-eye or bacon wrapped quail. The everyday entrees like the “Ginormous” chicken fried steak with garlic potatoes and gravy will satisfy any appetite. And then, there’s the music! Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion: The Center Of Culture In The Woodlands

Since opening in 1990, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion has become the second most used amphitheatre in the world, showing that Texans have as big an appetite for culture as they do for anything else. Construction on the project began when the Houston Symphony expressed interest in a summer facility in the Woodlands, and the Pavilion has since grown into a top-flight performance space for a large number of organizations. The facility has been steadily expanded since opening, and can now seat a staggering 17,000 people. Both the Houston Symphony and the Houston Ballet perform there regularly, and except for special events, lawn seating is free, which is awesome. In addition to the regular groups, the Pavilion books some of the biggest touring musical acts in the country, including Christina Aguilera, Iron Maiden, and dozens more. The venue is remarkably well run for such a huge space, with plenty of bathrooms and concessions available.

Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts: A Community Art Gallery

One of the most delightful art spaces near Marquis at the Woodlands, the recently renovated Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts is a museum that's always in transition. Because there are no permanent exhibits, there are always different things to see at the facility. The late Pearl Fincher was a local community leader, and this museum is a great tribute to her legacy. There are three major galleries that so far this year have brought amazing exhibitions, and the Community Gallery features exhibitions from local elementary, middle, high school, and college students. With upcoming exhibits that focus on local art and architecture, there’s always something interesting around the bend. The museum is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays until 8 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free, but a $3 donation per person is suggested.

Wimberly Valley Winery: Local Vintage

Wimberly Valley Winery proves that you can indeed get great wine from Texas. Located near the Villages at Spring Oaks, Wimberly Valley Winery produces a number of quality wines to satisfy many tastes. The thirty acre vineyard and facility also has a wine tasting room, the perfect place to take a class! For just $40 per couple, you can have a fun and educational time learn about how to pair wines with different foods, and to use all of your senses to understand how to truly taste a great glass of wine. There’s also a monthly “Around the World With Wine” class, which looks at a different region every class. Call ahead to reserve a spot. Wimberly Valley wines are sold in better stores around the area, but the winery itself makes a great spot for a trip away from Marquis at the Woodlands.
