The Smell of Home
April 22, 2013 | cwsapts
Did you know that smell is the most sensitive smell for triggering memory recall? That's why the smell of pine at the holidays or lilacs in spring can bring you instantly back to your childhood. With that in mind, consider how you can scent your home to make it more inviting, and also to infuse your memories with delicious fragrances. Below are a few ideas about how to incorporate the scene of smell into your interior design.
Candles
Invest in a few good smelling candles. They make lovely additions to living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms, but keep them away from the kitchen and dining room. Strong fragrances can interfere with food enjoyment!
Do some baking
There's nothing like the smell of fresh cookies or homemade apple pie to make a house feel instantly like home. If you're expecting company, pop a few cookies into the oven, and let the smell permeate your home.
Room sprays
Forgo on the Febreze, and instead invest in a "green" home fragrance. You can find them at specialty home stores, as well as Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. These natural fragrances infuse the room with scents from nature like lemon verbena, lavender, and rose.
Simmer cider
In the fall and winter, put a pot of cider on the stove, or mull wine in your crockpot. The spicy smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices will have you ready to curl up fireside in no time.
Fresh flowers
In the spring and summer, bring the outdoors in. Bouquets of fresh flowers are a great way to add a pop of color — and fragrance — to any room!
