Try the Reuben Sandwich at Joe’s Place

July 15, 2014 1:05 pm

Joe's Place is a Columbia, Maryland deli that has been serving awesome sandwiches for over a decade. In 1997, they were the first restaurant in the area to win a “Healthy Howard” award for offering health-conscious menu choices.

Regulars have a few sandwiches that they recommend. Try the classic Reuben sandwich with hot leaned corned beef, melted Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and sauerkraut on toasted rye, or get it with hot turkey breast instead. The October Road is also recommended: hot ham, melted Swiss, lettuce, tomato, and dijon mustard on a pretzel roll. Or you can try the hot roast beef sandwich, which melds hot roast beef, Swiss cheese, and spicy-sweet tiger sauce on a soft kaiser roll.

Portions are large, and prices are relatively inexpensive, with a sandwich costing around $8. Visit Joe's Place's website to learn more about this Columbia restaurant!

Toby’s Dinner Theatre: Where All the World’s a Stage

July 8, 2014 1:50 pm

If you’re looking for a fun way to spend an evening, book some tickets to Toby’s Dinner Theater for a quality meal and a night’s worth of excellent performance art. This Columbia institution has staged more than 32 seasons of plays, all held in a round theater where no seat is more than 30 feet from the stage. Sightlines and acoustics are top of the line.

Most dinner theaters don’t really win accolades from the theatrical establishment, but Toby’s is the exception: This venue has been nominated for a staggering 57 prestigious Helen Hayes Awards. The productions here are unilaterally crowd-pleasers, drawing from the long history of Broadway. One of the most notable things about Toby’s is that the venue doesn't use pre-recorded music; instead, the venue relies on a live band to perform the accompaniment at each show.

As for the food, it's served buffet-style with a wide array of choices, including a full-service bar and sundaes at the end of your meal!

High Fructose Corn Syrup Hides in These Common Foods

June 24, 2014 1:07 pm

While you might suspect that packaged foods like sodas and candies contain high fructose corn syrup, this processed ingredient actually lurks in many places that you wouldn’t expect. Here are a few surprising sources of high fructose corn syrup that you should avoid if you’re trying to eat healthfully.

  1. Yogurt. While most people consider yogurt a healthy food, when it’s packed with sticky sweet high fructose corn syrup, it’s a whole different story. Many flavored yogurts in the grocery store contain the sweetener to give them their fruity flavors, and even a large number of low-fat and fat-free yogurts are filled with it.
  2. Salad dressings. No matter how healthy you think your salad dressing may be, its positive traits don’t matter if it’s filled with high fructose corn syrup. If possible, making your own salad dressing is a surefire way to know exactly which ingredients are used.
  3. Breads. Even if you avoid all of the sweet, dessert-style baked goods at the grocery store, high fructose corn syrup may be sneaking into your diet through your plain old bread. Even breads made with wheat and whole grain often contain the syrup, so be sure to check the ingredient list before you make your purchase.
