Music Buzz: Fascinating Facts About Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen is one of the most important American rock artists still making music today. The Boss has grown from a struggling songwriter to an incredibly influential artist. Here’s some interesting stuff about his career.

Like many musicians, Bruce Springsteen got his start playing with a group. A couple in his New Jersey hometown philanthropically helped young musicians get their start, and they matched him up with a rock combo called the Castiles. He then played in a power trio called Earth and a bar band, Steel Mill.

In 1974, Columbia Records A&R rep John Hammond signed Springsteen to a record deal. Hammond had been the man who brought Bob Dylan to the label a decade earlier, so he had clout when it came to singer-songwriters. Springsteen’s first two albums were critical successes but commercial failures.

After an epic string of shows at New York’s legendary Bottom Line club, everything turned around for The Boss. His next album, Born To Run, was a tremendous hit. That year, Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek in the same week.

1984’s Born In The U.S.A. was Bruce’s biggest hit, moving 15 million copies in the States alone. Since then, he has continued to record and tour, with his music transforming from anthemic rock to more low-key, introspective works in the vein of his classic Nebraska.

Springsteen is also incredibly politically active, lending his music and his time to many different organizations.

Keep Your Resolve in 2012

A few weeks into 2012, many of us are struggling to make our New Year’s resolutions a reality. If your goals this year are fitness-related, keep the momentum going and follow these simple steps to starting and sticking with an exercise program.

Be realistic about your limits
Look at your available time, your interests, and your current fitness level when selecting an exercise program. Be honest with yourself – taking on more than you can handle will only be discouraging.

Try a few different workouts
Take your time finding an exercise style that appeals to you. Be open-minded – you never know what might work for you until you try it.

Set goals for yourself
Pick something that is challenging but within reach. Once you’ve met your goal, set a new one. Do something to reward yourself every time you meet a goal.

Make exercise part of your daily routine
Try walking or biking all or part of your commute to and from work. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, every day. Work out while you’re watching TV.

Work out with friends
Set up a weekly walk, run, or gym date with friends. You’ll have more fun and you will serve as each other’s motivation!

Five Unique Valentine’s Day Date Ideas

Are you looking for a memorable way to spend Cupid’s favorite day this year? Whether you’ll be celebrating with a long-time amour or a new romantic interest, these creative date ideas are certain to flutter your sweetheart’s pulse:

Outdoor Love
This year, why not skip the all too typical movie-and-restaurant Valentine’s routine and head outside instead? Consider a romantic evening picnic on the beach or in a park. Good wine, candles, and a warm shared blanket will make the experience especially cozy and intimate for the two of you.

Romantic Treasure Hunt
Rather than just handing a present to your special someone this year, consider making the gift-giving process extra fun. Hide your surprise and draw up a treasure map with intriguing twists and turns. You can also leave little romantic notes for him or her to discover along the way.

Rev up the Restaurant Routine
It can be hard to choose a restaurant for a special Valentine’s Day meal, so why limit yourself to just one? Considering starting out with appetizers at one place, moving to another for the main course, finishing with dessert at another restaurant – and then capping it all off with a nightcap somewhere else? A fun evening of restaurant-hopping will let you enjoy a memorable variety of tastes and atmospheres with your sweetheart.

Small Town Sweetness
Consider planning a romantic daylong outing to a small town near you, preferably one that you’ve never visited. Then spend the afternoon with your loved one exploring the town’s unique offerings – parks, museums, galleries, and restaurants.

Arts and Hearts
February 14th often occasions cultural events like poetry readings, concerts, and museum exhibits, so why not enjoy some of these romance-inspiring offerings with your sweetheart? Check out local papers and events calendars to see what’s happening in the arts world. You can make the day extra sweet by capping it off with a creation of your own, presenting your special someone with an original poem or piece of art.

New Jersey Nets: Ready to Surprise

The New Jersey Nets have one more year to make a splash in Newark before heading to Brooklyn. There's still plenty of time to say goodbye in style, though, and head coach Avery Johnson intends to put some excitement into the Prudential Center. Last season may have had its disappointments, but Johnson is more than capable of helping his team win, as his time with the Dallas Mavericks made abundantly clear. With the start of his sophomore season with the Nets, he's got talent to make that happen. Deron Williams is a two time all-star, and the recent acquisitions of veterans Shelden Williams and Mehmet Okur will add some serious and needed depth to the Nets' frontcourt game. This adds, of course, to a roster already featuring the skills of players like Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, and Sundiata Gaines. A number of people will tell you that this is a year of rebuilding to get ready for the team's move into the Barclays Center for the 2012-13 season. Those folks, though, are ignoring a lot of talent already on the roster, and a coach well acquainted with success. With all of the strength in Jersey this season, the Nets may just surprise the naysayers who think that the team is only building for Brooklyn. Stick around, because these guys aren't done with Jersey just yet.
