Wayne Relay for Life events kick off!

Celebrate. Remember. Fight back. Hope…These are the common elements of the American Cancer Society's signature event – Relay for Life. Through Relay for Life events, communities celebrate survivorship and the hope that one day cancer will be eliminated. They also remember loved ones who lost to the disease while finding comfort and healing.

As cancer never sleeps, Relays are typically held for a 24 hour period. Teams of people from all walks of life camp out overnight and have one member walking a track at all times. During the event, there are numerous activities, games, and events held. DJs and live bands work to keep Relayer’s moving.

Wayne's very own Relay for Life will take place on May 12-13 at Wayne Valley High School track and field. This year’s slogan is "Color Our World with Hope". To sign up or for more information, log onto www.relayforlife.org or email wayne.relay@cancer.org and for more information on the American Cancer Society call 1-800-227-2345 or go to www.cancer.org.

Check out the Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival!

The Annual Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival will be held in April for the year 2012.

According to the Essex Arts Newsletter, Winter 2011, the 36th Annual Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival will be held April 7th through the 22nd, 2012.

Located in Essex County’s Branch Brook Park (Newark, NJ), the festival features a bike race, a children’s fun run, a race for the disabled, the 10k cherry blossom run, a photography workshop, a free lecture series and the daylong Bloomfest celebration.  More information can be found at the BranchBrookPark.org website.

The festive highlight of the Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival is Bloomfest, a day of live performances and attractions in Branch Brook Park. Bloomfest 2012, will be held in Essex County Branch Brook Park, Belleville/Newark on Sunday, April 22 from 11 am-5pm. Bloomfest attracts over 7,000 attendees from New Jersey and surrounding metropolitan areas for stage performances, cultural demonstrations, and children’s activities.

The Bloomfest marketplace features crafters and artists selling handmade, cherry blossom themed crafts and products. Bloomfest is held rain or shine. Come See the Cherry Blossoms!

Of course, the star attraction of this event will be the cherry blossom trees. Japanese cherry blossoms predominate among the more than 4000 cherry blossom trees in the park. Their large white blossoms put on quite a show, an dare the most prominent feature of the bloom season. However, the addition of flowering Yoshino, Higan and Fuji cherries add blooms that range from pink to white in color. This variety also extends the blooming season to two weeks or more.

Thousands of visitors, both local and international, converge on the park every April to see the first reddish-white flowers bloom on the trees. The celebration of the start of the cherry blossom bloom season has been a long standing Essex County tradition. The festival is a point of pride for Belleville, which identifies itself as the “Cherry Blossom Capital of America.”
