Built in the 1940s, Riverside Golf Course is a historic Austin course that has hosted golf legends like Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite over the years. If you're used to playing on today's elite courses, Riverside Golf Course might seem a bit short, simple, and straightforward at first, but if you keep its history in mind, you'll appreciate playing on a golf course that shaped a generation of golf's great players.

The course is rated a 7.3 on the Texas Outside scorecard, and the fairways are lined with stately old maples, pecans, and oaks. The course's pro shop can supply all your basic equipment needs, while professional instructors can help you fine tune your technique. After your round of golf, try relaxing in the attached restaurant with a tasty char-grilled burger and an ice cold beer.

Rudy’s Country Store & Barbecue: Fuel Your Car and Your Belly at This Quirky Barbecue

Texas is known for many things, but barbecue is surely one of the most important. Rudy’s Country Store and barbecue restaurant is a standout spot in Austin’s booming restaurant scene, beloved for the way it merges a restaurant, general store, and even a gas station if you need to fuel up after dinner.

While the operation is quirky, Rudy’s food menu is one to be reckoned with. Half-pound racks of tender, juicy ribs, moist brisket, tangy potato salad, and sweet creamed corn keep regulars coming back again and again. Order at the counter and watch the skillful cooks slice your meat right in front of you, and then enjoy your meal over a cold soda or beer at one of the long, communal picnic tables either inside or out. Finish your meal with Rudy’s excellent banana pudding and you’ll leave feeling positively stuffed.

Rudy’s Country Store is open 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekends. On Sundays, the restaurant is open 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

El Pollo Regio: Mesquite Charcoal Grilled Chicken With Humble Beginnings

El Pollo Regio came from humble beginnings before growing into a chain of 49 locations, including several in Austin. Opened by Juan Jorge Bazaldua in a special trailer with a mesquite charcoal grill, El Pollo Regio features the founder’s popular marinated chicken. You can order the whole chicken, which comes with rice, beans, and tortillas. You’ll also the chicken in such menu options as the chicken tostada, chicken soup, and chicken poblano mole. The menu also lists grilled carne asada and flour tacos.

If you want to share the popular, authentic Mexican dishes with your friends, El Pollo Regio provides catering services. Nostalgic fans of the restaurant can take it a step further and pay homage by traveling to Oklahoma City, where the original trailer is still in use at one of the branches.

Pfluger Park: Embark on a Shady Retreat

A neighborhood park is a valuable asset to the entire community that it serves, especially one as clean and well maintained as Pfluger Park. This park is a shady respite from Austin’s fast pace, and it offers something for visitors of any age. The colorful play area is filled with monkey bars and climbing structures that the kids will love, the gazebos are ideal for an outdoor birthday party, and dog owners love the tree lined walking trails. The 30-acre Pfluger Park also features a sand volleyball court and a basketball court for more athletic visitors. “Hair of the 3-Legged Dog”: An Austin Day Party on March 19

With so many great events coming up next week in Austin, it can be hard to figure out what to attend. So, here's a suggestion: "Hair of the 3-Legged Dog." This event's presented by The Austin Chronicle (and sponsored by Greystar), and it's named after the Chronicle's mascot Hank.

It takes place on Thursday, March 19 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. and brings food, drinks, and fun to The Liberty Bar on East Sixth Street in Austin. Four local artists will play music at the event: Sweet Spirit, Anya, Bop English, and Flesh Lights. There'll also be snacks from Tacodeli, Rhythm Superfoods, Baked By Amy's and more to fuel Austinites for another day of SXSW.

Bring a Hearty Appetite for Tex-Mex Fare to Chekos in Austin

The burritos here might just be some of the best lunch deals in Austin. You can get a burrito topped with cheese for under five bucks, and you might even have leftovers when you're done. Other popular dishes include the carne guisada, a hearty beef stew perfect for cooler days, as well as the sizzling fajitas. Tacos are also dependable (try the lengua!). Regulars also praise the margaritas at Chekos.
