Upper Crust Bakery: Breads, Pastries, and More

With more than 28 years in the bakery business in Austin, Upper Crust Bakery has earned itself a bevy of loyal fans who flock there for freshly brewed coffee and yummy breads and pastries. Croissants are available here in a dizzying array of flavors, including cinnamon almond, marzipan, ham and cheese, and chocolate. Also in the pastry case are muffins, scones, cookies, cinnamon rolls and turnovers. Brioche, baguettes, rye, whole grain, and ricotta herb are among the bread options.

Stop by Upper Crust at lunchtime for a bowl of Italian stew with spicy Italian sausage, potatoes, garlic, mushrooms, and herbs. An apple, goat cheese, and pecan salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing is a fresh and healthy option. Sandwiches include chicken salad with pecans and grapes, tuna salad, smoked turkey, and avocado with vinaigrette.

Billy’s on Burnet: An Austin Gastropub

Pinthouse Pizza: A Homegrown Brew Pub

The name might say Pinthouse Pizza, but here, beer is the star. Located on Burnet Road across from the Sunshine Community Gardens, Pinthouse Pizza doubles as a brewery. Classic flavors are made alongside seasonal brews that are available to enjoy right in the brew pub. If you’re new to the place, do yourself a favor and get a beer flight, four different brews that can give you a good idea of the flavors in Pinthouse’s arsenal (make sure to check out the calendar of special beers). The ambiance of the Pinthouse is pure beer garden, with long bench tables just right for hanging out with friends. And then, there’s the classic pizza and specialty pies, all tasty and made with fresh ingredients. The Pepperoni Pizza is a favorite among regulars.

Find Comfort Food at Austin’s Bacon

Austin is filled with quirky restaurants, and Bacon is no exception. Here, just about everything on the menu is either topped or stuffed with — you guessed it — bacon. Regulars make the trek downtown for the Chicken and Waffles, a tasty meal of crispy chicken on a bed of bacon-stuffed waffles, perfectly sized for large appetites. Breakfast tacos with house-made chorizo, bacon, and pulled pork are another popular item.

Although breakfast is the busiest time, Bacon offers lunch and dinner options as well, including a flavorful Pulled Pork Sandwich topped with bacon. (If your arteries can handle it, get a side of Bacon Fries topped with cheddar cheese, sour cream, chives and of course, bacon.) The small space has indoor seating for 50, as well as communal picnic tables outside. Counter-ordering and an efficient kitchen staff minimize the wait.

Bartlett’s: Vegetarian Cuisine and More in Austin, Texas

Named one of the 20 best restaurants in the 2011 Austin Chronicle’s Restaurant Poll, Bartlett's’ is a national franchise and a relatively new addition to the Austin area. This steakhouse features a wide menu of simple American cuisine.  Many regulars start with the spinach and artichoke dip. For a lighter meal, the Asian steak and noodle salad is a recommended choice, and Bartlett’s is famous or their french dip sandwich. Steaks served with their house-made Worcestershire sauce and grilled fish dishes round out their entree options. Popular a la cart sides include the shoestring french fries and garlic mashed potatoes. A gluten free menu and raved-about veggie burger accommodate customers with dietary restrictions. Dim lighting and deep booths give Bartlett’s an intimate ambiance. The elegant bar area features an “After 5” menu with small plates and drink specials – try the grilled artichokes if you’re looking for a light snack.

Try the Salted Caramel Gelato at Teo

Whether you come for a coffee in the morning or a gelato later, you’ll get a treat at Teo. Located directly across from the hospital on West 38th Street, Teo brings a little bit of Italy to the streets of Austin. Make Teo a morning stop for a terrific coffee drink. You know that it will be good, because every barista who works here is trained in Italy! The café, decorated in bright, inviting colors, is a nice spot to enjoy your cup. There are even daily newspapers on the wall for your reading pleasure. The outdoor patio is also nice, with a fireplace when the weather gets cold. The fresh made gelato is the star here There is always a nice selection of flavors, but regulars like the Peanut Butter Nutela and Salted Caramel. With the free Wi-Fi, it’s a nice way to end your day.

Fusion Fare at Austin’s Roll On Sushi Diner

Roll On Sushi Diner embraces fusion fare in diner-themed style, right in Austin, Texas. This casual and fun Sushi bar in Allandale has plenty of Austin twists to their specialty rolls. The Cholesta roll is the most popular, with chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans rolled up together and served with gravy. Another favorite is the Beefy Texan with beef brisket, wasabi cole slaw, avocado, and spicy bbq mayo. There are plenty of traditional options too – try the sunshine roll – a California roll topped with salmon. For dessert, consider the Tempura fried ice cream. Chow Down on All-American Homestyle Diner Fare at the Austin Diner

For home-style breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes, come to the Austin Diner. Located on Burnet Road near the North Loop Boulevard, the Austin Diner is an all-American spot for equally all-American food. Breakfast is a favorite here because you can get it in the morning or all day and night! Everything’s good, but folks really like the breakfast tacos, and some think the homefries are the best in town.

The lunch and dinner menus also feature tasty American diner fare that’s made with fresh ingredients and to order; nothing is frozen. The diner recently moved to a new location, so it’s a whole lot bigger. The décor is really cool and comfortable, with lots of chrome, blue walls, and oval windows. Can’t stay? There’s also take-out. And the Austin can cater your next party or event.
