Stop Into Chisos Grill for Southwestern-Style Comfort Food and Spirits

Chisos Grill’s logo is a monumental West Texas rock formation set against a cool desert moon. With a scene like that, it’s easy to picture cowboys sharing food by the campfire — grits, smoky meats, crawfish, tortilla soup, and tequila. That’s what you get at Hill Country Galleria: all-natural, Texas-raised, Southwestern-style comfort food.

Burgers, pulled pork, and queso get high marks from diners, and while the menu might not be as authentic as it claims, it’s reliably tasty stop at the mall. Do some down-home drinking, too; the bar sports 30 beers, 25 wines, and 20 spirits, all made in Texas and memorably deployed by a crackerjack bar staff. Nearly everything is gluten-free, and there’s happy hour every day.

Check Chisos Grill’s site for specials and live music details.

Interesting Trivia from Outdated USDA Food Guides

Over the years, the USDA has compiled a large number of informational food guides to advise people on everything from counting calories to managing diabetes. While some of the advice remains with us today, other tips have been superseded by new discoveries and better nutrition knowledge.

Here are some interesting tips from past USDA food guides:

  • In the 1940s, food portion sizes were measured using a yardstick rather than the cups or ounces that we use today.
  • In the 1960s, the USDA recommended that people eat the same amount of grains as they did fruits and vegetables. Today, we know that we should limit the amount of grains we consume, in favor of eating more fruits and veggies.
  • Many of the USDA’s food guide tips developed in the 1980s are still in use today, such as limiting sodium intake, drinking alcohol in moderation and avoiding saturated fat and cholesterol.

The Backyard at Bee Cave: An Austin Music Experience

If you haven’t seen a show at The Backyard at Bee Cave, you're missing out on a quintessential Austin-area music experience. This outdoor music venue has hosted legendary artists such as Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, David Bowie, and countless others. Set in Texas’ beautiful hill country, the surroundings are just as spectacular as the music. Although there are indoor bathrooms, they are a bit small. That's the tradeoff to enjoy a relatively intimate venue, with the opportunity to get closer to the stage than other spots that welcome big name artists. Tickets tend to be reasonably priced, as well as parking. Traffic can get congested close to the entrance. The Backyard recommends carpooling – if there are four or more to a vehicle, you can park for free. Just be sure to take a friend’s SUV, the gravel lot can be rough on low profile vehicles. Regulars suggest using a car locater app on your smart phone to find your car at the end of the night. Visit the website for a schedule of shows!
