Get Your Bowl on at Santa Clarita Lanes

Bowling gets kind of a bad rap as a sport enjoyed by old dudes in synthetic shirts, but if you haven’t been in a while you might have forgotten how satisfying the crack of the ball against the pins can be. Santa Clarita Lanes is a fantastic local alley that hosts league and open bowling as well as regular tournaments for advanced bowlers to show their stuff. A number of weekly specials also draw diverse crowds; Saturday night sees cosmic bowling in Thunder Alley, with a powerful sound and light show adding some adrenaline to the mix. Most weeknights guests can enjoy Quartermania from 9 p.m. to closing time, when deep discounts apply to food items and ten bucks pays for unlimited bowling. Sunday mornings also host an unusual but popular combination of bowling and breakfast. Regulars rave about the friendly, welcoming staff, who really bend over backwards to make your experience great.

Rattler’s BBQ: The Best Cue in Santa Clarita

Don’t let the name fool you—there are no venomous beasts at Rattler’s BBQ. For twenty years, this homestyle restaurant has been serving up the best barbecue and casual dining experience in Santa Clarita. Using a unique two-step cooking process that sees meats slow-cooked overnight and then seared over a mesquite grill, the kitchen knocks out spectacular meals all day long. If you’re a fan of tender, savory meat, the baby back ribs can’t be missed here—the delicate meat virtually falls off the bone and the house sauce complements it perfectly. For beef fans, the tri-tip is cooked to pure perfection, and the broiled chicken is good as well—among the moistest you’ve ever eaten. Sides are also good, with the garlic mashed potatoes winning special praise. For a few more dollars, you can opt for the well-stocked, fresh salad bar, which is probably a good way to balance out your carnivorous consumption.

Mentryville: Tour the Old Oil Town

When it comes to historic landmarks in Southern California, Mentryville is a hidden gem. During the oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mentryville sprang up because of the first commercially successful oil well in the western U.S. At its peak, over 100 families lived there. Now a ghost town, you can still get a glimpse of life during that unique time, thanks to the still on-site schoolhouse, barn and Mentryville Mansion. Once the home of Charles Mentry, the founder of what would become Chevron Oil, Mentryville is a 13-room home that shows the life of the well to do in those times. On the first and third Sundays of the month from Noon to 4 p.m., you can get a guided tour from helpful volunteers.
