Kabuki: More Than Just Great Sushi

It can be hard to convince less adventurous eaters to take the plunge into Japanese food—the concept of eating raw fish can be just too much for some to handle. Those in the know, however, understand that Japanese cuisine is about more than just sushi, and Valencia’s Kabuki does a great job of representing the diversity and excellence of the country’s culinary traditions. This popular chain has branches throughout California and Arizona, serving up not only sushi but cooked foods that have regulars raving. Some of the hottest dishes on the menu include the tonkatsu, a breaded cutlet of pork served with a savory sauce, as well as the variety of tempuras. Classic Japanese noodle dishes like udon and ramen are also well-represented. And, of course, if you have a yen for sushi there is a wide variety of rolls on the menu to nosh on. The Lotus on Fire roll is a particular favorite.

William S. Hart Park & Museum: Explore the Home and Legacy of a Silent Movie Star

Less than an hour’s drive from metropolitan Los Angeles lies one of the oddest of LA County’s Natural History museums. The former residence of silent movie star William S. Hart, a Spanish colonial mansion atop a hill has been turned over to the county to serve as both a museum and a park that has its own herd of bison. Hart made 65 silent movies, starting his acting career at the age of 49, and when he died he deeded the property to the County on the provision that it be set aside for public use at no charge. The ranch now boasts a number of hiking trails that lead visitors through the dramatic terrain, a barnyard with farm animals, and the aforementioned bison, which were a gift from Walt Disney. The house itself acts as a museum of the silent film era, the American West and Native American art.

Comparing Hybrid Cars

As fuel economy becomes more and more important, hybrid cars are one of the fastest-growing markets in new car sales. A large number of manufacturers have hybrid models on the market, from compacts to trucks. This article will compare some of the most popular and see how they stack up for efficiency, comfort and utility.

Toyota Prius
The first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, the Prius has had over a decade to develop itself into the poster child for hybrid vehicle. Surprisingly roomy and comfortable, the Prius has excellent mileage and performance, making it the best all-purpose hybrid car.

Ford Fusion Hybrid
Ford’s modification of their Fusion sedan has won a number of prestigious awards, and offers higher fuel efficiency than many other hybrids. However, several models had to be recalled due to software errors.

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
This exceptional family sedan is a new contender on the market, but it delivers great performance, remarkable fuel efficiency and a lengthy warranty. The one complaint some drivers have is that it lacks headroom for very tall people.

Chevrolet Volt
The Volt has had a rough start on the market, as it combines a pure electric drive with an optional gas engine. Unlike the other cars on this list, it has a plug-in battery that’s good for about 40 miles, then the internal combustion engine recharges it beyond that. Some complain that the required premium fuel is annoying.

Lincoln MKZ
This luxury hybrid is a step up from some of the other cars on this list, boasting an impressive powertrain, plenty of passenger space and an excellent value for the money. It has a very smooth ride and unbeatable fuel economy.

Le Chene: Fine French Dining in Santa Clarita

Voted the most romantic restaurant in the Santa Clarita area, Le Chene serves spectacular, authentic French food in a gorgeous location surrounded by a glade of oak trees. The restaurant’s architecture will remind you of a small castle, with a fantastic patio, wine cellar, and a fine bar. The wine cellar is deserving of some special notice—housing up to 32,000 bottles, it wins the restaurant special recognition from Wine Spectator for their vast range of vintages available. Owner Juan Alonso bought the building in 1980 and renovated it into its current state, in addition to planting a vineyard next door. The food is uniformly excellent, with diners praising the lobster, wild boar, and what some have called the best duck anywhere in California. The drive can be a bit much, but once you get there, it’s like a peaceful oasis that will reward your dedication.

Frankie’s New York Italian Restaurant: A Taste of the Big Apple In California

If you’re hankering for East Coast Italian food, Frank Competelli has you covered. The Big Apple transplant relocated to California two decades ago and decided to bring the food he grew up with to a new audience, which has received him with open arms. At Frankie’s New York Italian Restaurant, you’ll get the classics prepared with great ingredients and fine attention to detail. Regulars rave about the many lobster preparations on the menu, including a tender stuffed tail and a spicy, hearty lobster fra diavolo. The linguini with clams is also excellent, as are the black Angus aged steaks and the tender osso buco.  Portion sizes are large, as you'd expect from an Italian place, and prices are fair. And just like dining in the city that never sleeps, Frankie's is open late—the kitchen doesn't close 'til midnight.

Ride the Rails With Fillmore & Western Railway Co.

A good portion of America’s history is the history of the railroad—the great train lines that criss-cross our nation, making it possible to run the engine of commerce that makes America great. Those trains were also immortalized in film, and the Fillmore & Western Railway Co. has made it their mission to preserve and restore famous movie trains from the great studios and get them rolling again. Bucolic Fillmore is your starting point, but the trains travel to a number of destinations, from a rustic pumpkin patch around Halloween to a variety of other places. While you could just sit and admire the scenery, Fillmore & Western Railway Co. tries to jazz things up with themed trips, including a hilarious live-action murder mystery that will have you feeling like Sherlock Holmes. The one complaint people have with the line is that the on-board food isn’t great, so eat before you go.

Happy Labor Day!

Wishing you a very happy and relaxing Labor Day!

Five Most Dazzling Musicians In History

To truly be a legendary musician, you need to possess a unique combination of talents. Not only do you need a mind that can reconcile both the complex task of performing music, but one that can also infuse it with emotion. The five musicians in this article combine physical mastery with deep reserves of soul to stand above all others.

Glenn Gould
Widely regarded as one of the most versatile and compelling pianists in history, Gould had a unique ability to infuse his personality into everything he played. There were certainly performers who had more technical skills, but none with as much soul.

Jimi Hendrix
You can’t find an electric guitar player on Earth who wasn’t inspired in some way by Hendrix. The Seattle-born axeman was one of the greatest innovators the instrument has ever seen, and few have even come close since.

Buddy Rich
Despite his legendary sour temper, nobody worked the drums like Buddy Rich. The sticksman elevated every ensemble he played with by furious, perfectly-phrased beats. Rich was able to skirt the line of chaos but always come back to perfect timing.

Lester Young
Jazz clarinetist Lester Young came to prominence playing with Count Basie’s orchestra, and he gave the woodwind a tremendous amount of dynamic range and feeling. “Prez,” as he was called, influenced a generation of musicians after him.

John Fahey
The Maryland-born guitarist John Fahey reinvented the acoustic guitar with his seminal recordings, taking an instrument that was commonly used as backup for singers and giving it a unique and powerful voice of its own.

Craving Fresh Sushi? Try Sushiya

If you talk to a real sushi expert, they’ll tell you that the most important thing in the whole experience is the freshness of the fish, which should not be disguised with lots of sauces or wasabi. Sushiya has won the hearts of regulars with its extensive menu that takes Japanese food as a starting point and takes it a step beyond. Appetizers of note include the fantastic chicken karage (Japanese fried chicken), fried oysters, and a wonderful tuna poke. Some rolls that regulars recommend include the great rice-free Oh! My God, a decadent concoction of deep fried soft shell crab, spicy tuna, crab, avocado, and mango; and the unique Geisha Roll made with albacore and red onion. The nigiri is equally excellent, prepared expertly to showcase the excellent quality of the fish. Service is quite good, attentive without being overwhelming, and the location is nice.
