Play A Round at the Best Course in Ventura County: Elkins Ranch Golf Course

Widely regarded as the best golf course in Ventura County, Elkins Ranch Golf Course offers 18 holes of PGA certified championship course amid a gorgeous background of California orange groves. Located in the quaint small town of Fillmore, this is a top-class course nestled into a calm, bucolic setting. The views from the course are phenomenal, with the Sespe and San Cayetano mountains looming in the distance and the sweet country air blowing through. Originally carved out of the Elkins family’s 110-acre citrus ranch in 1961, the course has become a popular destination for local golfers who remark that the course is kept in exceptional condition and the greens fees are very reasonable. However, that means that it can get pretty crowded, especially on weekends, so be ready to wait a bit between holes. Regulars also rave about the snack shop before the 10th tee, which makes some of the best hamburgers in town.

Get Your Bowl on at Santa Clarita Lanes

Bowling gets kind of a bad rap as a sport enjoyed by old dudes in synthetic shirts, but if you haven’t been in a while you might have forgotten how satisfying the crack of the ball against the pins can be. Santa Clarita Lanes is a fantastic local alley that hosts league and open bowling as well as regular tournaments for advanced bowlers to show their stuff. A number of weekly specials also draw diverse crowds; Saturday night sees cosmic bowling in Thunder Alley, with a powerful sound and light show adding some adrenaline to the mix. Most weeknights guests can enjoy Quartermania from 9 p.m. to closing time, when deep discounts apply to food items and ten bucks pays for unlimited bowling. Sunday mornings also host an unusual but popular combination of bowling and breakfast. Regulars rave about the friendly, welcoming staff, who really bend over backwards to make your experience great.

Mentryville: Tour the Old Oil Town

When it comes to historic landmarks in Southern California, Mentryville is a hidden gem. During the oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mentryville sprang up because of the first commercially successful oil well in the western U.S. At its peak, over 100 families lived there. Now a ghost town, you can still get a glimpse of life during that unique time, thanks to the still on-site schoolhouse, barn and Mentryville Mansion. Once the home of Charles Mentry, the founder of what would become Chevron Oil, Mentryville is a 13-room home that shows the life of the well to do in those times. On the first and third Sundays of the month from Noon to 4 p.m., you can get a guided tour from helpful volunteers.

Mountasia Family Fun Center: A Mountain Of Thrills and Entertainment

In 1995, a new face in the family entertainment business opened up in Santa Clarita to the deafening cheers of young children. Mountasia Family Fun Center boasts a gigantic array of activities for kids of all ages—from a massive enclosed Lazer Tag playfield to a huge go-kart track. If you’re looking for something slower, two themed 18-hole miniature golf courses are ready to challenge. Throw in batting cages, a climbing wall, and a video arcade and you’ve got the total package. Admission is free as each attraction requires a charge, and you can purchase unlimited-play passes to save money. A visit to Mountasia can get expensive with a lot of kids, so be forewarned. In 2001, a Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor was added to the premises, and if you have fond memories of this old-school chain, you’ll find all of your favorites still on the menu.

Local Theater and Entertainment: Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center

It took some time for the College of the Canyons to construct a performing arts venue that would do it justice, but once the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center was opened in 2004 it quickly became a venue for all kinds of live entertainment, from theatrical performances to music. The spectacular 886-seat theater offers great proscenium seating with amazing sightlines and excellent acoustics, and frequent visitors comment that there is literally not a bad seat in the house. A smaller “black box” theatre hosts more intimate and experimental works as well. The Center’s booking staff works hard to fill the calendar with a rich variety of presentations from the Chancellor’s Choice series, which sees national bands in a variety of genres rock the stage, to the Great Performances series, which presents musicians, acrobats, dancers, and more from around the world. The Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center also hosts touring presentations of Broadway hits and much, much more. Click here to see what's on stage next!

Devil’s Punchbowl: Take a Long Drink Of Natural Beauty

One thing that the American Southwest has in spades is interesting rock formations—the geological variety of the landscape makes for stunning vistas and exciting exploration. Just inside Los Angeles County resides the Devil’s Punchbowl county park, which allows us surface-dwellers observe the notorious San Andreas Fault and its effects on the Earth. Many short trails branch off from the trailhead, leading off to a variety of fascinating formations. Most notable is the Punchbowl itself, a steep V-shaped canyon that drops 300 feet at the vista point. Composed of sedimentary rocks inclined in steep layers, it’s an unsettling yet beautiful sight. The visitor center at the canyon’s base offers guided park tours as well as an on-site 11-inch telescope for viewing some of the area’s formations that aren’t accessible on foot. Entering the park also gives you an in-depth view of California’s plant biomes, with each change in elevation revealing a different assortment of flora and fauna.
