The Poached Pair: A Relaxing Start to Your Day

May 14, 2013 1:00 pm

Start the day right at the Poached Pair. Located just block away from the Metrolink station in nearby Newhall, the Poached Pair calls itself a “boutique bakery.” When you come in you’ll love the laid back atmosphere and the sweet smells. Come in the morning to get yourself one of the Poached Pair’s trademark scones with a  cup of coffee, sit back and relax in the dining area or at one of the patio seats. With the free WIFI, you can catch up on your email. Come back for lunch, when the Poached Pair has a specialty sandwich of the day, made on fresh baked bread made in-house. And of course you can always pick up a sweet treat to take home, be it cookies, scones, cupcakes or other favorites.

Mentryville: Tour the Old Oil Town

May 10, 2013 12:01 pm

When it comes to historic landmarks in Southern California, Mentryville is a hidden gem. During the oil boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mentryville sprang up because of the first commercially successful oil well in the western U.S. At its peak, over 100 families lived there. Now a ghost town, you can still get a glimpse of life during that unique time, thanks to the still on-site schoolhouse, barn and Mentryville Mansion. Once the home of Charles Mentry, the founder of what would become Chevron Oil, Mentryville is a 13-room home that shows the life of the well to do in those times. On the first and third Sundays of the month from Noon to 4 p.m., you can get a guided tour from helpful volunteers.
